There are a couple different reasons on why I am interested in cybersecurity technology. Reason number one being that it is something completely new for me. When I first started at Old Dominion, I was a psychology major. I switched to cybersecurity my second semester and have been enjoying it ever since. I am always learning about something new, which I love to do. Reason number two is that it challenges me. There are so many different terms and different kinds of attacks and ways to prevent attacks and so may more things, the list never ends. Reason number three is that cybersecurity is always changing and growing since it is all about technology. A few years from now, it will have different aspects that it does today, so there will always be new things to learn.
Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary study and there are many different aspects to it. Four majors at Old Dominion that relate to cybersecurity are mathematics, computer science, criminal justice, and even psychology. Mathematics relates to cybsecurity because there are instances where you either have to figure the transmission rates for sending/receiving packets, converting units like kilobytes to bytes, and especially trying to figure out CIDR numbers. Computer science relates to cybersecurity because there is a lot of coding and knowing about hardware/software that also goes along with cybersecurity. Criminal justice especially relates to cybersecurity because attackers that compromise systems, especially ones that are requesting ransom, have to be brought to justice, so that other organizations don’t have it happen to them as well. Lastly, I believe psychology is a large part of cybersecurity because we have to know how these attackers think and their behavior. Cybersecurity is not just a single disciplinary subject, as we have seen here, many different aspects go into it to create what we know about cybersecurity today.
