When comparing my initial expectations with my actual outcomes, I do feel like I achieved what I wanted to with this course. I feel like I achieved the course objectives pretty well and I am glad about that. My attitude about Cross Cultural Psychology have changed for the better. I have really grown to enjoy this course and the topics that were taught throughout it. Something that I would do differently next time is to study more for sure. One way that I have grown academically in the last year is I have learned what works for me when it comes to studying and taking notes. A skill that I have gained is being able to critically think about topics that are especially hard or something that I am not familiar with.

I chose this photo because it represents my academic growth with this course over the last semester. Yes, it has taken time, but at the end, I am better because of it.

Over the course of this class, the top three things that I learned are how and why cultures differ from one another, how we can make connections from this course to other course we have taken or are taking, and the benefits of learning about different cultures. When doing these blog posts, I found that they almost always correlated to what we had to do in the items to archive, which I found helpful when deciding what I wanted to write about in my blogs. Something from this class that I could connect to another class would be how everywhere has different values and ways of doing things. Throughout our school career we start to learn about this in history class, but with cross cultural psychology, you are able to dive deeper into this.

I don’t know if I have ever closely paid attention to this, but reading this article has made me think about it a little bit more. Overall, I think that their behaviors have been similar to my expectations. As people, we almost automatically assume that different people react differently than yourself. I do think that the concept of universality and cultural display rules can help explain some of my experiences because it talks about how people from other cultures expression themselves differently.

I do think that fairy tales have a shared set of cultural norms and values. Many of the books and movies that we watched that contained fairy tales revolved around and shared the same values. With main characters modeling more of an egalitarian, it would have a more positive impact on younger kids. I feel like they would be more confident and have less anxiety about being good enough. Since Brave came out when I was quite a bit younger, I feel like her as being a strong female character positively impacted me and showed me that women could do anything that men could do.

This weeks blog was honestly the hardest one to understand so far. For the way I satisfy autonomy academically, I would say I try to turn to things I enjoy when I feel stressed or overwhelmed from school and this tends to help me be able to relax and then return to completing more school work. Another way is that I always try to keep up with assignments that are due and I believe that is going very well so far. With competence, the way I satisfy that academically is asking questions if I need to. That helps me be able to complete assignments better than if I did not know what I was doing. Lastly, the way I satisfy relatedness is thinking about how all students are going through the same thing with school work and balancing everything else that we have to do as people.

With my statements, I think that numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9 are associated with independent and numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 are associated with interdependent. Even though with this assessment I found that both of them are equal, I would have to say that I would lean more towards being more interdependent. For independent self I said “being yourself” and then for interdependent self I said “how you want to be around others”. I thought it was easier to come up with the interdependent. One reason that I could think of for my tendency is that I would say that I am kind of a people pleaser and don’t really want to disappoint or let anyone down.

I learned that it is helpful tot take notes during reading the textbook and going over the powerpoints. I ended up leaving the review sheet until the end of the week, which next time I would have spaced it evenly over the days of the week to help me retain the information better. I think it will help me know to take my time answering each question and really making sure that I understand it fully before answering the question.

With taking the NEO quiz, I had a score of 18 under neuroticism, which made it average, a score of 12 under extroversion, which made it very low, a score of 18 under openness, which made it very low, a score of 45 under agreeableness, which made it very high, and lastly a score of 37 under conscientiousness, which made it high. I feel like these results are consistent with my personality, especially the extroversion category. I am very much an introvert and prefer to be alone or with a few of my close friends.

I continued onto higher education because I wanted to gain more knowledge on what I was passionate about and then be able to apply it to my future career. My parents have always supported me no matter what I wanted to do. They shared their experiences and then helped me make my decisions. Teachers over the years have prepared us for college and I feel like that is the main purpose. High school especially doesn’t prepare us for the real world or if someone chose not to go to college.

The most important course objectives that could help us in the future is being able to make connections from one thing to another thing, in this case it is this class work to the outside world. One of my expectations from this course is to be able to make these connections from the information that I am learning to my past experiences or what I already know. I am hoping to gain a little more insight on different cultures and reasons why they could differ from our own. One strategy that I especially tend to implement to ensure success in this course is getting all of my work done on time and even early in most cases. I am also going to keep up with my note taking and getting it done early in the week as well.
