At the beginning of the course, I predicted that I would learn how to interact with different cultures and become more culturally aware. The course syllabus states that the objective of the course is to “acquaint upper-level undergraduate students with psychological research and theory that examine the influence of culture and psychology throughout the world, understand cultural diversity and the impact of culture on human life, develop greater understanding of people from other cultures and skills for successfully interacting with them (intercultural competence), develop critical thinking skills and apply them to psychological theory and research that examine the influence of culture and to be able to make connections, or integrate learning, between courses and to outside experiences.” I believe that I have especially mastered the last one. I have learned how to use my life experiences to connect to topics in the classroom for a deeper understanding.

If I were to take the class again, I would manage the coursework much better. Academically, I have grown by learning how to relate topics in different classes to benefit my learning in each class separately. I have learned time management skills and I also learned patience. This was a course that required more critical thinking than many of my previous classes and I believe that this will help me in my future academic endeavors.

I learned many things throughout this course. The top 3 would be how to relate things to subjects in different courses, how to stay organized, and how to use things in this course to relate to people of different cultures in the real world. An example of how I related things to a different course is the many correlations between the information learning in this class and my Psychology of Women class. Both classes address the differences in how many and women are viewed when it comes to many things like emotions, household duties, and more. I also learned how to stay organized in this class. I was able to keep track because there was not a copious amount of assignments due and I was able to learn something from each assignment. I also learned how to relate to different cultures and use my knowledge to assist people from different countries at my job, working in a hospital.

I used my grades on the major assignments to boil down what I’ve learned throughout the semester.

I believe fairy tales reflect a shared set of cultural norms and values. One example of this is Goldilocs and the three bears. People often wonder why a young girl was roaming the woods by herself, however it must be understood that this was a normal occurence during the time period that she lived in. The impact of Goldilocs could be positive in the sense that it shows a young girl doing things for herself and never settling as she goes through and picks the best to her standards.

A fairy tale that I identify with is Cinderella. Similar to Cinderella, I inherited two mean step sisters and a step parent. This fairy tail showed that despite the emotional toll living in a situation like that has on you, you can still come out the winner. It showed me that you are more that what others say about you and that most of the time when people are bullying you, it is probably because you they are envious of you. Cinderella gave me a more positive outlook on the situation I was in.

Self-determination theory is a framework which states that a person’s motivation is a direct result of three factors: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. There are many ways in which one can satisfy each of these needs. Personally, I satisfy the need for autonomy by creating a schedule for myself. Creating a well planned day/week will allow me to feel like I have control over my life by doing things when I feel would be best. I am also constantly decorating and redecorating the rooms in my apartment because the place where I reside is the place I have the most control over. To maintain the need for competence, I dedicate a lot of time to my school work. Completing assignments and receiving positive feedback in the form of good grades allows me to feel like I am accomplishing things. I constantly seek ways to improve and tackle new situations. In order to improve relatedness, I try to offer a relatable experience to other people that I encounter. I speak my mind amongst my peers and make it clear that my friends have the ability to do that around me as well.

Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4,  5, 6, 9, and 10 are associated with the independent construal of self.  Numbers 7 and 8 are associated with the interdependent construal of self.  Based on my answers, I believe I am more independent than interdependent.

Independent self: “Love yourself always”

Interdependent self: “Treat others how you want to be treated”

It was easier for me to think of proverbs that reflect independent self.  I believe the tendency comes from being the only child in my household and not having to consider other children for the majority of my childhood.

The course objectives will help me in the future in many ways.  As a future educator, it is very important for me to be familiar with different cultures to make all of my students comfortable.  In order to properly educate, I must be properly educated.  I want all my students to feel, seen, and respected.  It will be very important to learn about the phycological impacts of culture on human life and be able to identify behaviors in people. I expect to gain insight on cultural differences and how to address them when presented with them.  I intend to keep up with this course by accurately managing my time so that I have enough time between reading the chapters and completing the assignments.
