Assignment Takeaway #5
I chose this image because it is a literal example of the big five personality trait theory.
Assignment Five was about how people’s aspirations can affect life satisfaction in Japan. The journal article discusses how extrinsic and intrinsic values can affect subjective well-being. It goes further to add how the big fiver personality traits theory affects subjective well-being as well. Both types of personality characteristics affect the how successful people are in reaching their aspirations. The study proved that intrinsic values lead to more successful aspirations. The content of this journal article used the personality values that we had previously learned in this course as well as what I had learned in my Theories of Personality course. More specifically, the in-depth evaluation of intrinsic and extrinsic values and the big five personality trait theories. What I took away form this assignment was that if you train your find to think a certain way, intrinsically, then you will be more successful in your aspirations. Not only that, but my personality trait affects that outcome as well.

I chose this image because it represents American advertisements. Sex sells even burgers…
Takeaway Assignment #4
The assignment that I completed was about how Japanese advertisements were less focused on physical appearances, like American advertisements, and more about aesthetically pleasing art forms, as in anime. Japanese advertisements tend to use Kawaii to target their female audience, since they enjoy that style. Opposed to how the American advertisements portray women as sex objects in order to sell things. This is just like how we learned that different countries cultural values are vastly different to those in America. Other countries tend to focus more so on the importance of family and viewing themselves as more than just an object. American values are more self-serving. The personal relevance of the material, to me, is that I don’t agree with how American’s view women. Especially how they are portrayed through the media. It equates their worth to being only sex objects and we are more than that.

I chose this image because even though America is known for being very competitive and number one in a lot of ways, they are also very arrogant acting and undeserving of the title.
Takeaway Assignment #2
What I took away from this assignment is that I really don’t like what Americans value as important to their culture. In any way, especially their views on competitiveness. The subject I chose was Americans value of competitiveness. There are some good things that can come out of being a competitive person, but there are also toxic things that can come out of it as well. Americans value competitiveness because it shows that they have the drive to be successful and to be number one. That is what America is most known for, being number one. Even though Americans value being number one competitively in all things positive, they are also number one in negative things as well. What I had learned in my Gender-based violence and Juvenile delinquency courses, is that America has the highest crime rate and gun violence rate. Being number one has its costs and maybe valuing competitiveness isn’t the greatest option for a cultural value. Other countries have considered themselves to be competitive but have managed to preserve other values over competitiveness. Maybe having a balanced view on competitiveness is wise.

Takeaway Assignment #1
What I took away from working on this assignment was that there are different stages to understanding and accepting another’s culture and to become more culturally sensitive. The different stages that the article goes through and how it breaks each step down is very insightful and informative. It goes on further help me understand how others may be stuck on certain levels of understanding and how they could potentially not be able to progress forward. As for myself, I believe that I have already become culturally aware and more culturally sensitive because of the environments that I have worked in. This assignment has highlighted that fact for me. The image I chose is to represent how if everyone could be more culturally sensitive, then the world would be a better place.
