In assignment 4 we had to take a survey or a quiz that we used to see if we were low or high in the 6 different types of love; Eros, Ludus, Storge, Pragma, Mania, and Agape. The above image shows what the different types of love are and what they mean. My results were surprising but also expected. That could be due to how long my wife and I have been together as well as the type of relationship we have. I enjoyed this assignment as I tend to enjoy quizzes.

For the third assignment we watched the YouTube video about Michael Richards’ racist rant at a heckler. He said derogatory things to the audience member and even though he has since apologized, this is still in everyone’s minds, especially those he hurt. We had to discuss if we thought it was racist or if it was anger, if he wanted to hurt them, etc. I think while it was brought out in anger that it showed a subconscious racist aspect of himself. It isn’t hard to not say those things, so I think he believed them in some way. I chose the photo above as it is one of the things he said in the video and as I don’t feel comfortable using a photo that shows the words he called the person, this also make me uncomfortable but it is important to show. This, especially, shows some kind hatred in his heart and it is scary to think people still think this. However, I work a school and one day I had a talk with one of my students and he and another boy told me about how sometimes at school people will call them names and this 8 year old boy told me, “They say racist things, it hurts, but that’s how it is.” To hear an 8-year-old tell me that, “that’s how it is” is extremely sad. While I know some children have had to grow up faster than others due to circumstances, an 8-year-old shouldn’t have to think that. They should be able to go to school and play and be children. I mean, it is 2020 for crying out loud. I was honestly stunned and said, “While I’m not surprised you know racism, I am also surprised and stunned.” My own wife has been followed in stores by workers because of her skin tone so much she told me she is never going there again without me because, “If I’m with a white girl they will think we are good.” This assignment showed me even more that, that anger still exists, even if the video is from the early 2000s.

Who am I? What do my photos say about me? This assignment was looking into who we are and how our past photos have shown our personality and who we are. We looked at 6 to 12 photos of ourselves and we have to decide what it showed of us and our hobbies, values, etc. I chose ones mostly from my childhood except for a few from my wife and I and our cats. The photos showed my personality in general, which is goofy, family oriented, artsy, etc. This relates to defining self and who we are. I really enjoyed this assignment for nostalgia reasons and it really showed me a lot about myself as well.

Our first assignment was about heuristic. Heuristics are rules of thumb we use to make difficult decisions easily. The main ones are representative heuristics, availability heuristics, status quo, and anchoring and adjustment. I enjoyed learning about all of these and their shortcomings. I feel it brought to attention the things we do that we may not know that we do, such as believing the media is giving us all the statistics such as availability just because the media shows more of something doesn’t necessarily mean it is accurate in the long run. For example, just because they show more plane crashes doesn’t mean that planes actually kill more people, they don’t, cars do. I also feel we judge based off of our prototypes or to be honest, stereotypes, like in representativeness. This is why I chose the photo I chose; it shows the fallacy in representativeness, it is not always true.
