How do engineers make cyber networks safer? Well, within the cybersecurity technol-society course I learned that engineers work in unison with the fundamentals of cybersecurity to create programs, applications, and networks that are very secure. Most cybersecurity professionals aren’t tasked with creating networks or other applications. They are expected to just be able to continue to secure the networks or applications that are already put in place. So, that is where engineers come into play or more specifically network engineers.

Typically, when you think of engineers you think of the ones who help create buildings or parks (school or amusement). A network engineer is not the first thing that comes to mind when someone says engineer. However, either engineer is required to make sure creations are safe. For example, I know buildings are required to be able to sway with heavy winds. So, if you are in a building and feel alarmed that a building is swaying during a tropical storm don’t be. The swaying helps keep you safe and if the building did not sway then the engineer in charge of creating that building should probably be fired. It goes the same for network engineers, if a network engineer created an unsafe network, they would get in a whole lot of trouble. So they make cyber networks safer by ensuring that unsafe networks are not created or used.

One article describes the latest in networking creations. One of the new coming ideas/creations is called a “software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN),” it gives businesses the chance to be able to use multiple network connections that allow a private LAN analog to be created that stores information in the cloud. The idea is said to be smoother in function and helps with the trend of working in remote settings (The 4 most important networking trends…2020). This was probably created by an engineer and designed to help keep the cyber networks safe as the world continues to advance and resort to remote working. So, engineers make cyber networks safe by creating new and stronger networks.
