How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims? Cyber technology allows offenders to prey on victims and allows victims to feel the effects of offenders. Offenders steal important information and create malicious codes all thanks to cyber technology. They can steal information by phishing or gaining unauthorized access to name a few things. Phishing is when messages are sent to individuals that look like they come from legitimate organizations, but they don’t. The messages usually ask for the individual to provide important information or click on questionable links. This oftentimes allows the offender to take the information they received to steal personal information from individuals (victims). This can cause identity theft, a breach in credit card info, or even a breach in an individual’s account. Gaining unauthorized access can be done by offenders through phishing or simply by stealing an individual’s password that has access to important information. Offenders can steal someone’s password by doing things like a dictionary attack (a form of password hacking).
Malicious codes are things like virus’s, trojan horses, ransomware and worms. They often cause problems amongst individuals like the above mentioned, but they also cause a lot of problems for companies, organizations, and even countries. A fairly recent attack I know of that involved a malicious code was the one done on the colonial pipeline. The offenders enacted a ransomware on the pipeline’s functions and the impact was brutal. I remember for days people panicked to get gas and after a while most places that once had gas no longer had gas. This went on for a week if I remember correctly. All of the above mentioned were taught within the first month of my introduction to cybersecurity course and as well as the cybersecurity technol-society course. This truly outlines the importance of cyber technology and the interactions between offenders and victims.
Cyber technology has served as a medium for offenders to place attacks and it has it effects on the victims. Whether that be a loss of personal information or a loss of gas. I imagine as cyber technology continues to advance the interactions will only increase.
