I can remember getting my very first computer and coming home every day and playing games like bubble shooter. It was always on one of those sites that randomly would have ads pop up every now and again. There was never a lock next to the site indicating a secure platform. Well, one day my computer crashed and back then it was a shock, but now I see why. Maybe going on unsecured gaming sites every day wasn’t the best way to make sure my computer was safe. Had I had any of the knowledge I have now my computer would not have gotten a virus and died the way it did.
So, how do I now know that my computer is safe? Well for starters, I make sure all the sites I go to are reputable and secure. There should be a little lock icon before the start of a website to indicate that. I also invest in good virus protection. McAfee and Norton are amongst some of the popular options. I chose McAfee. Virus protection is good, but also being aware of possible phishing emails is a good way to keep your computer secure. I never click on links in emails unless I know the sender is actually who they say they are. This can be done by looking for spelling mistakes or errors within the message. It is also important to never go on unsecured networks. Places that offer free Wi-Fi can be beneficial, but a lot of the times they are completely unsafe. The most important thing to do though to ensure your computer’s safety is to not only use complex passwords on websites but also use a complex password to open your computer. This ensures no one can view your information. Taking all the preventatives mentioned and more is how I know my computer is safe and will continue to be safe.
