Being a nursing major it can sometimes be challenging to makeand find friends. Being in a learning community I am able to make not only new friendsbut new friends in my major. I have made so many friends and I can not wait to make somany more. I expect my biggest challenge this semester to be procrastination. In highschool everything came easy to me learning wise. I now know I need to study and workhard. Nothing comes easy anymore, I need to get all my work done as soon as possible ifnot it piles up. I have a job currently, however I put my resignation in. I need to focus onschool. As my mother always says “school is your job”. I was averaging anywhere from20-50 hours a week. I am mentally preparing myself for any challenges that may come.In high school I participated in Young Life, Student Council Association, as well asNational Honors Society. I was a projects manager in Young Life, helping to plan anyprojects and field trips. In the Student Council Association I was the secretary, I helpedwith communications between the clubs and also took important notes. In my school’sStudent Council Association I also helped run the concessions stand during basketballgames and volleyball games. In the National Honors Society I helped coordinate serviceprojects and managed communications between clubs. I plan on joining a sorority, Iwould love to have the feeling of a sisterhood while navigating college. I loved the waymy learning community made me feel. Having a sense of family and connection makesme want to continue that after my learning community.

Major/Career: My intended major is Nursing. I am a nursing major because I have been in and out ofhospitals my whole life. If I can help people the nurses and doctors helped me I will feelcomplete in life. My mother had a tumor in her spine when I was a younger child andwhenever I would go and see her in the hospital the nurses were very rude and nothelpful to myself as a young child. I want to be better than them, I want to make sureanyone I help will feel welcome and satisfied with their care. Skills that I possess that willmake me an excellent choice for nursing is I am goal oriented, strong willed, a greatlistener, and a quick learner. All of these skills will make me an amazing nurse and aneven better worker. One experience that fuels my passion for nursing is my motherstumor. I was a 11 year old whose mother was in the hospital and being 11 and hearingyour mother has a tumor is scary. I want to be better than those nurses, I want to showthem that you can be compassionate towards an 11 year old and still get your job done. This is my chance to do better. My career goals are to finish college and then get rightinto nursing. I want to become a physician’s assistant, I want to jump right into mycareer.

Study Habits: The biggest difference between high school and college is work load, and walking. Inhigh school teachers really didn’t give you a huge workload and everything was prettymuch written out for you. In college not only do you have to walk what feels like 5,000feet to get to your next class you also have to apply yourself a lot more. There is adifference between studying and homework. Homework is assigned to you, you have todo it if not you get a bad grade. Studying is applying yourself after homework to learnmore and excel in class. I have a total of six classes, three on Monday, Wednesday, andFriday, and three on Tuesdays. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I start my day withchemistry, then English, then history. I plan on studying anywhere from 1-2 hours foreach class. On Tuesdays I have sociology, health professions, and my chemistry lab. I planon studying anywhere from 2-4 hours for those classes. I plan on studying at my housemost days, it is a quiet environment and I can get a lot done by shutting my door, grabbing a glass of water and sitting there checking things off my list. My best time ofday to study is early morning if I do not have a lot of reading to do, If I have a lot ofreading to do I like to do it mid afternoon. A specific studying technique I like to use andthat works best for me is color coding. If I color code then I know why I’m studying eachspecific thing

Transition to college: College is an exciting new adventure, I am personally excited about meeting new peoplewith my intended major.
