Learning Style: Self Assessment.
My Study methods differ from subject to subject, based on the difficulty of the subject
and my passion for the subject. The classes I take are: Statistics, Chemistry (Chemlab),
Sociology and History. Among these subjects ], the ones that I find somewhat challenging are
the ones which require a lot of reading like sociology and History but the ones that are
somewhat a breeze for me are: statistics and chemistry because of the calculations they
involve. My study methods in class and outside class differ with each class, here are the ways i
study for each subject:
For Statistics, in class I take the front seat to make sure that I stay attentive to
whatever is taught. And I take down notes of important information. Outside the class I do all my
assignments for the class and study what was learned that day by doing the exercises posted
by my teacher on blackboard.
For chemistry, I usually read the material before the class to gain a background
knowledge of what is going to be taught and then I take notes in class. Outside class I go for
tutoring and group study with people from my class.
For Sociology class, I usually take notes and ask questions during class and
Outside class, I read ahead on my classes and prepare questions to ask for my next class. I
also revise past quizzes for each topic.
For history class, it’s the only class I find somewhat challenging. I usually watch videos
on my lectures and read documents from external sources pertaining to the lecture. I haven’t
gone to tutoring yet but i plan on going for tutoring next week.
I am doing really well in my statistics class because of the study method i have
implemented in this class, i take notes, and practice exercises of the topic taught.
Step 2
One class I am currently struggling with is my History class.
Planning:
The study methods that will work best for me in this class are the study groups, going for office
hours and quizzing myself.
I will spend 1 hour studying for each day this week. I will give more attention to the classes and
take notes in them. I will schedule office hours with my teachers. I will spend more time on the
topics that my teacher outlined in the syllabus and fully understand them.
Monitoring :
If I’m being honest, I am not being really systematic in my studying of the material. I have not
fully taken advantage of all the learning support available to me. I am not fully motivated to
study the course material because of the amount of reading it entails. Although I know that I am
taking this course as one of my major prerequisites for nursing school. I do not have any
confusion with regards to this course.
Evaluating:
Reading after every class has helped me for my retention long-term. Now for every test I don’t
have to spend that much time trying to read what was taught in the past weeks, and on the day
of the test or the day before i just revise all i have read. I should never do last minute reading,
although I should do all my assignments on time, I should not think that doing assignments is a
replacement for actually reading the course material.
4.
The resources i reviewed are
– Forming a study group
– Reviewing syllabi
– Setting goals
– Note taking
– Time management
5.
The resource I am going to implement into my study is note taking and time management. I am
going to take notes in each of my classes and study those notes. I will also allocate more time to
my studying.
