Crazy in the brain

The name of the health professional that I interviewed was Tonya and she is a licensed professional counselor and a local supervisor for the community psychiatry program at John Hopkins. She has a master’s degree in psychology and additional coursework in therapy, so she is also a licensed therapist therapy supervisor, where she can teach other graduate students as well. She was always interested in psychology because she wanted to know how people think and why they do things. She has been working in the mental health field for over 25 years. She works with patients who have co-occurring disorders, which is a psychiatric diagnosis and some also have a diagnosis of substance abuse. Tonya’s job is to oversee the work of her team of therapists and coordinate their day-day schedule. Some things they do to maintain sustainability is turn off all electronics, recycling, and other rules and regulations they follow. Her favorite part of the job is working with the patients and seeing how much they progress. A challenging part of the job she mentioned is trying to get the mentally ill patients to see that there is a better way to live and sometimes you have to stand back and let the patients take their own course of action. Her advice to future healthcare providers is starting early and getting as much experience as you can. Something I learned from this interview is different things about the psychology department and some things they go through dealing with their patients.
