Your First Semester
- Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.
Over the semester, I learned what college was really like. I am able to write better professional papers, I know more about topics that were for the most part, glossed over in high school. I also found that I am able to succeed in a college environment seeing as I have all A’s in each of my classes.
- What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.
I expected that college was going to be really hard. I thought I was going to struggle with assignments and not be able to understand most material. However, college is much easier than I thought. The assignments were relatively simple and easy to do, and the material for most of my classes was stuff I had learned about in high school, only it had more detail and went into more depth on the topics.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
Professors are much more relaxed and forgiving than what they are portrayed to be. As long as you pay attention and do the work, they are willing to work with you if you have any problems.
Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
I still haven’t studied much. There rarely was a topic I struggled on and if there was, it was math. But math was easy to sort out once I do the homework and any problems they want me to solve.
- How have your study habits changed?
As I said before, they haven’t changed much since I haven’t had to study. I do all the things I’ve done from the beginning of the semester. Read my textbooks, do my math homework, and finish any assignments as soon as possible.
- Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.
I haven’t used any resources if I’m honest. I’ve been able to keep up with everything and so far, understood each topic enough to succeed.
- What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?
If there is trouble, I will definitely be taking up tutoring. I’ve tutored people before and I know the impact that it can have on someone who isn’t understanding anything being taught. I’m sure I am going to need tutoring when I take General Chemistry I next semester.
Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
I was not in any other classes. I was only enrolled in SOC 201S and HLTH 101. I was able to skip CHEM because I had gotten a 3 on the AP exam for chemistry and I didn’t even know that people were in a history class. Instead I took BIOL 121N, BIOL 122N, ENGL 110C, and MATH 103M.
Parallel Plan
- This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
- Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?
I like the Med Lab and Nuc Med seems interesting. Both are technical and deal in medicine. The only reason they aren’t my top choice is because they don’t have enough interaction with patients and nursing is too broad and deals with a lot of things I am squeamish about.
- What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?
Of course, having a back up plan is good incase I fail to make any requirements for my Pre-Health major. I could also fall back on a different degree if I am not accepted into any med school
- How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?
They both deal with the more technical side of medicine and med schools are looking out for those with experience with these kinds of things. While my major now definitely boosts me, these majors would help me stand out against the crowd
