From the Other Side: The Therapists Point of View
Summary
During my interview, I talked to a Therapist about how a person goes about to become a therapist and how a life is maintained when hearing about people’s horror stories. Her name is Kimberly Carr and she is a Licensed Social Worker and is a Clinical Director at Family Psychiatric Associations. She has a degree in social work, has done papers, sat on advisory boards, and is a diplomat with the American Psychotherapy Association. Some of her jobs are doing usual business things: filing taxes, paychecks, etc. However, for the most part, she is handling therapy appointments with her patients. Her most challenging aspect of her career is that she is constantly aware of people’s pain and their horror stories but the most rewarding is the patients being able to move on and grow beyond her help. From hearing her side, I’ve learned the mental health world is one where you have to be sure to know who you are and ensure to keep any boundaries between yourself and patients. A hard thing to do when you hear about all their pain.
