Mid-Semester Reflection

My name is Katelyn Lawson and I attend Old Dominion University. This is my mid-semester reflection. I’m doing well in all of my classes except chemistry. I would say I need more assistance with chemistry. Chemistry requires more focus, more study time and you tutor. I have been going through alot since I got here on campus actually. It’s been hard to maintain my focus and keep motivation to keep going. I had expectations to strive and be the best I could be when I got to ODU. Though things have gotten in the way of that, I haven’t given up. 

I would say the main thing that shocked me a couple months after being here would be, people didn’t lie when they said professors aren’t going to care like highschool teachers did. You really have to push yourself to get out of bed every morning and go be great! Another expectation would be making new friends on campus. I would say, that has been quite challenging for me. I live on campus. I actually just moved into a single room recently by myself which is helping me focus much better. The biggest challenge with staying on campus would be, having to wake yourself up for classes. 

I learned that the nursing program here at ODU is 2 years long. My plan coming in with my associate’s degree was to only be here for two years to get my bachelors degree but that may change if I get into the nursing program here at ODU. My feelings haven’t changed about my major at all. You just have to have motivation to get the work done. I wanted to start a minor in Women’s Studies soon due to me having interest in it and me already being in a Women’s Studies class. 

A problem that I have encountered this semester so far would be maintaining my motivation to keep going. I can’t lie, it’s been very difficult for me. I have reached out to the dean of students here at ODU, they’ve helped me out alot with motivation and weighing my options with certain things. I would say my mom has been my biggest supporter and motivation this semester all the way from home everyday. I haven’t attended any interesting meetings or clubs. Maybe I should meet new people.
