Journal 2: Cybersecurity and its relationship to other degrees at ODU

In this week’s journal entry, we will pick 4 other degrees offered by Old Dominion University and examine their relations to cybersecurity.  In the digital age where everything is online, it’s hard to find any field of study or work that doesn’t cross paths with cybersecurity. With everything being connected more than ever in human history, cybersecurity is as important as it has ever been. Thus, interconnecting all sorts of industries and fields through the common need of protecting their digital assets.

Firstly, the relationship between Cybersecurity and Computer Science is obvious. Both fields share a foundation in programming, algorithms, and networks. Cybersecurity professionals often build upon the programming skills acquired in Computer Science to develop security solutions, safeguarding digital assets from potential attackers. The synergy between these degrees is fundamental in developing innovative cybersecurity measures.

Looking outside of tech degrees, the relationship between Cybersecurity and Business Administration is significant. The overwhelming majority of businesses will have at the very least some form of web presence in 2024. Thus needing some form of cybersecurity plan in place for asset protection, even if minimal. Business Admin students, by understanding the effects of a cyber-attack, acquire valuable perspectives on the financial burdens businesses can endure that can be caused by a lack of cybersecurity risk management. The effective collaboration between these two fields is vital for the success of businesses of any kind. Some universities offer Cybersecurity with concentration in business for these reasons.

The relationship between Cybersecurity and Nursing is increasing over time. Across the globe nurses are now being integrated into the protection of digital healthcare assets and data through training and strategy planning. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that protects patients is a cybersecurity framework. With growing telehealth practices and the rise of getting health info and medical records through online portals, nurses’ roles in cybersecurity are looking to only increase in the future.

Lastly, unity with Political Science is probably not the most obvious but possibly the most significant. In cybersecurity, issues of national security, international cyber threats, and policy frameworks are extremely important. Poli-Sci degree holders will possibly contribute to the development of policies that address global issues and protect the interests and assets of entire nations. Some universities offer Cybersecurity with an emphasis in PoliSci.
