Module 6 Artifact

Most of us think we behave very consistently from situation to situation. However, what most of us think is cross-situational consistency is really temporal consistency, behaving much the same in the same situation on different occasions. Therefore, for many of us, there is some variation in our behavior from situation to situation. This assignment gives you an opportunity to monitor how much your behavior changes from situation to situation.

First, list five different traits that you think are most characteristic of your personality (e.g., humorous, sensitive). Then, keep a descriptive log of your behavior in five different situations you are in over the next few days. Write a paragraph about each situation, indicating how you behaved along each of the five traits you listed above. That is, record how you behaved with regard to each trait for each situation. Next, determine whether you feel your behavior was consistent or inconsistent, and why?

Trait 1: Hardworking

Situation 1: I am currently balancing a part-time job while being a fulltime student with great academic standing.

This week I had to work 5 days out of the week. I also have many assignemntsm disccusiosnabordas, and quizzes for many classes. Not to mention making time for studying and having time to do other things outside of school and work.

Trait 2: Humorous

Situation 2: Making my friends laugh at the right times.

My friend is going through a hard break up and she knows exactly who to call when she needs a laugh. I was there to be her support but to also make sure she was smiling. My family and friends always tell me how funny I am and how good I am at cheering anybody up. I just like to see the people around me happy.

Trait 3: Outgoing

Situation 3:  Talking to customers at my job

I am always starting conversations with customers that come into my job. Whether it’s just asking how their day has been and that conversation ends up taking off. I have always been good at starting conversations even with people I don’t know. Customers always compliment my energy at work.

Trait 4: Emotional

Situation 4: Crying watching a movie

I’m a pisces and we are a very emotional sign. I cry off of everything, it can be the smallest thing. This time it was the new movie on netflix ft Zendaya about a love story. This is a trait I don’t think will ever change about me and I find nothing wrong with it, because I never have to worry about holding my emotions in.

Trait 5: Caring

Situation 5: Bough by my sister some candy

Yesterday I stopped by the store on my way home after work to pick up some snacks. Even though my sister didn’t ask, I already knew to bring home her favorite candy. She was more than happy. I know that the little things always matter and it doesn’t take much to make someone’s day.

I chose this artifact as my number five. This item to archive had me really sit down and think about what I loved most about myself and I came up with these five characteristics. This archive helped me to be more motivated and it reminded me of what I love most about myself. I tend to focus on what I want and do not have instead of what I do have, which I do take things for granted. The picture I chose is a quote that relates to this artifact for me personally. I really pride myself on being able to make my friends and family day better. Whenever I see them sad I always make sure to try and make them laugh. They have always appreciated me for that because, everyone can’t do that. That is my favorite trait about myself and I will continue to do that for the people I love forever. Taking the negatives and throwing them away allows room for all of the positive aspects of yourself, which I have learned to be truly happy.

Module 8

Module 8 Archive

For each ethnic and racial group, pick the two adjectives from the list below that best describe each group, regardless of whether you believe the stereotype to be true. Each adjective can be used to describe more than one group.

Americans  tradition-loving            family-oriented

Chinese      pleasure-loving           scientifically-minded

English       reserved                         nationalistic

Germans    superstitious                      industrious

Irish            musical                       artistic

Italians      quick-tempered         tradition-loving

Japanese    sly                              reserved

Jews            religious                selfish

Blacks         athletic                    materialistic

I think stereotypes have changed over time. As times change I think people are starting to get to know people before judging them by ethnicity. I am hoping to get to a point where racism and stereotypes don’t exist anymore but, I know that will take a lot more time.  The content of these stereotypes are changing because times are changing as well. For example, people aren’t only looking at blacks to only be athletic because now other races are as well. The picture below shows the stereotypes that some black females go through.

I chose this item to archive as my fourth. This is a very important topic and can be uncomfortable to others. This item was a little bit different for me because I am not used to expressing my opinion. Talking about race and how stereotypes is a very difficult subject because every one has strong opinions on those subjects. Stereotypes have changed negatively and positively over the years. I feel that stereotypes for blacks are still negative; however, they are becoming more positive. Also, with the stereotypes for blacks in the past two years has become out of hand and light has been shined on that subject. I chose this image because as a black female these are some of the things we are stereotyped for.

Module 11

Please write down the initials of 10 people you know fairly well. Then, beside each name, write down whether you think the person is happy (H) or unhappy (UH), and whether you would consider them selfish (S) or unselfish (US).

Person H or UH /// S or US

1. NH            H        US

2. NH            H         S

3. BB            UH         US

4. JH          H       US

5. JW            H        US

6. KS           UH       US

7. TJ         H      US

8. NH           H       S

9. WA            H         US

10.   KB         H   US

Please code the number of people from above who fall into each of the four cells below. For example, if you have three unhappy/selfish people then put a “3” in the unhappy-selfish cell.

Happy/Unhappy

 Selfish 20
 Unselfish 62

A majority of the people I chose were unselfish and happy, which was a total of 6. 2 of the people were unhappy and unselfish and I think those people put others’ happiness before their own, which is why they may sometimes be unhappy. However, they are extremely unselfish because they go out of their way for everyone. I have 2 people who are happy and selfish because they put their happiness before other people and are very selfish; however, if they are happy with being alone and do not need other people then that is how they are. However, a majority of my close friends and family are unselfish and happy, which is a very positive trait to obtain because that is exactly how I am. Selfishness and happiness normally do not go together because to be happy you have to have some sort of people interaction; therefore, you have to be kind to others and help when needed and if you are selfish, people will catch onto that and will not be around you. Friends and family help each other and look out for each other and you cannot be selfish and be surrounded by many genuine people.

I chose this module as my third item to archive. Many people that I surround myself with are very happy and unselfish and I am the same way. I like to be around people who carry the same energy as me. I am very happy with my life and the people that I surround myself with. Overall, i really enjoyed this assignment because it showed me how happy I am to have these people in my life to support and push me to be my best. Also, I am the type to be there for them as well. So it is very healthy relationships. The picture that I used describers majority of the people in my life right now including myself.

Aggression involves a wide range of issues that lead to both psychological and physical damage to oneself, other people or objects in a specific context. In most cases, aggressive behavior is demonstrated when a person harms the other It should be noted that aggression can range from physical cruelty to verbal misuse. In fact, it can also involve damaging one’s property due to anger or maybe provocation. The aggressor’s objective is to make sure that another person or object is harmed and they gain whatever they intended. While aggression is mostly intentional and planned, there are cases whereby it often occurs in an instance of the moment. As such, this may be due to an unexpected attack, and the victim consequently defends himself or herself in an aggressive behavior. Besides, some people may act aggressively in response to undesirable experiences. For instance, one might be aggressive when they feel frustrated. Animals demonstrate aggression for many purposes. Some animals, like in are predatory behaviors. Others like to involve behaviors for survival that determine dominance, control and existence. Animals might fight with one another like in  to achieve supremacy and claim certain resources. However, not all animal behaviors display aggression, because other behaviors are due to the breeding of their species.

I posted this as my 4th item to archive. I had a fun time with this project because it had me actually identifying scenario vs scenario to decide if it was considered aggression. However, threatening or actually committing and unkind act is using aggression; therefore, it just depending on the situation and if the individual was actually trying to harm the other individual/object. This assignment really made me think more than others. Overall, i enjoyed this assignment because it engaged me and allowed me to think from different perspectives than I normally do; therefore, I should do that more often than only seeing things from my point of view. I chose this image because it represents aggression.

Aggression as a sign of affection

Module 10

Social psychologists such as Asch and Milgram have repeatedly demonstrated that much of our behavior is influenced by powerful norms, yet many students will deny their vulnerability to these social forces. Instead, they might say they would resist group pressure and not conform or obey.

Milgram suggested that one way to feel the potency of social norms was to deliberately violate them. Over the years, he asked his students to violate a norm by singing out loud on a crowded bus or simply ask people on a crowded bus or subway to give up their seats without an explanation. Needless to say, many of his students recoiled en masse!

For this exercise, violate an implicit norm and then analyze both your own and other people’s reactions.

It is considered a norm for everyone in my family to sit at the table and eat dinner together. When dinner was ready I fixed my plate and sat down isolated from everyone in the living room. I didn’t say anything to anyone nor did I look up at anyone I just acted like they weren’t there. My thoughts and feelings were, I did feel really bad for ignoring them and acting like no one else was there. My family was looking at me crazy and asking why I was sitting away from everyone else. My little sister kept asking if anything was wrong with me. But I had to play off for this assignment. I was able to gain insight into my behaviors and that of others. There are some social rules that govern our behavior in a particular community. Both explicit and even implicit such as various codes of polite behavior (DeRidder, & Tripathi, 1992). Me not sitting at the table was a form of deviance to the norm of having dinner with my family. My reaction and admission to feeling weird  showed me that people actually can conform under pressure into doing things that they would not primarily do. People do conform to fit in a group or to be better informed.

I chose this item to archive as my favorite because It was really fun to get my family’s reaction to be breaking a norm that we have in the house It is a social norm that every one should follow and is completely rude if not followed in our house. This item to archive was more interacting than others, thats what I liked about it most. I chose this image because it resents people breaking social norms, sleeping on the table in the library .
