SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

In this class we used a website called LingoLearning. This helped me a lot because it gave me a lot of practice in Spanish and got me used to it. We explored the Spanish culture by watching a variety of different videos of people talking to each other and also explaining what they did for their cultural holidays.

These products and practices helped me tremendously because it forced me to look through my notes and to go back to the packets and review and remember it more. It challenged me because there were a lot of things that I was unsure of how to do in Spanish. It revealed that I needed more patience and better study habits. It forced me to understand the different types of things that people did differently from my country and try to understand them.

Engaging in Communities

Through my class we were given the opportunity to speak with classmates in Spanish and really practice what we were trying to learn and we also had interviews with our professor which made us learn how to speak in Spanish better.

I don’t have any videos/pictures but we had to submit videos of us doing projects where we talked about different places we go and explain what we do at each place and describe it and how we feel about it.

Interpersonal Communication

I never had to use TalkAbroad or anything else. But throughout our classes our teacher allowed us to get with a partner and practice asking and answering questions. This really helped me and my class because it allowed us to get a better understanding and also ask questions if they were needed.

Some class exercises we did was our professor would write questions on the board and allow us to answer them and speak in Spanish. She would also ask us questions which would really get the class thinking about what she had asked. This allowed the class to really think outside of the box and use critical thinking. I excelled at learning much of the vocabulary but i struggled with conjugating verbs sometimes and other difficult things.

Presentational Speaking

For this class we did one assignment/project where we had to give three places that we visit often. With this we needed to describe the place we were at, we had to talk about what we like about the place and then what we did in that given place. We also sometimes had to do interviews with our teacher for a grade where we talked and had conversation with a partner and she also would ask us questions that we had to answer.

The Video we did on canvas was most challenging because for some of the criteria i had to explain things that maybe I did not learn in class. Next time I would ask more questions and make sure that I

In this class for a project we had to make a calendar. For this calendar we gave an hourly run down of the things that we did on each day of the week.

I have grown with the calendar because it made me think about the things i did and how to translate it to spanish. the thing that became the easiest was the vocabulary but the most difficult was the conjugating. I excelled with hard work and determination.

Interpretive Listening

In English, give a very brief 2-3-line description of interpretive listening activities you completed this semester for or related to your Spanish learning. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).

For listening activities we had to watch videos of students/people talking in spanish with each other. these would be about each other or with each other.

We listened to people speaking with each other. This ranged from student t student and student to professor and other things. The thing that was most unclear was how fast they would speak at times. I overcame it by slowing down my brain or just listening for key words. My takeaway from this experience was that I needed to become a better listener and understand what people say when speaking fast.

Interpretive Reading

For this we had to read a lot of things in lingo learning for homework assignments.

A lot of unclearness I found was some of the vocabulary that I had not learned or was unfamiliar with. I found most interesting some of the things and activities these people would d. My takeaway was that by using context clues I could figure out a lot of what people were trying to say.
