Internship Activity Summary

During the time that I have spent so far at DaVita Petersburg, I gained valuable experience in healthcare administration and learned about dialysis operations and patient care. I assisted with important tasks, such as placing supply orders and performing other key duties. Operating with the Facility Administrator, I managed inventory and made sure weekly orders were placed on time, which taught me about budget management and communicating with vendors. I also organized patient treatment schedules, balancing clinical availability with patient needs and staff capacity. This taught me how to manage time effectively and reinforced the value of strong organizational skills. When challenges arose, such as missed treatments, I helped develop follow-up plans and participated in conversations about patient accountability and retention.

A critical part of my internship was supporting the management and documentation of patient mistreatment concerns. During my internship, I collaborated with leaders to report incidents and ensure patient safety while also adhering to regulations. This experience showed me the importance of professionalism, empathy, and clear communication. I joined weekly team meetings with nurses, dietitians, social workers, and medical directors to discuss patient care plans. This teamwork helped me understand how it affects patient outcomes.

I was surprised to participate in a state audit, which taught me the importance of following regulations and maintaining accurate records. I helped the team with files and administrative tasks in a busy environment. Overall, my internship was valuable. It has strengthened my communication and organizational skills, exposed me to the inner workings of a dialysis facility, and demonstrated to me the crucial role that administrative support plays in delivering high-quality patient care. These experiences have confirmed my passion for healthcare administration and prepared me to take the following steps in my career with confidence.
