In reading Lt. Col. David M. Beskow and Kathleen M. Carley’s article on social cybersecurity, I was intrigued to find out about the shifting landscape of warfare. The article showed the evolution from traditional cybersecurity, centered on technology, to the emerging discipline of social cybersecurity, which focuses on the manipulation of human behavior in the cyber domain.
The authors paint a picture of the strategy of information warfare, using the example of Russia’s efforts to cause problems in society by breaking trust and influencing what people think. In societies that are free, such as the U.S., they are particularly in danger from these new social cybersecurity risks. Social media platforms are unregulated and many people are unaware of these online risks.
The article calls for education for both military personnel and society to learn about these online risks which is a crucial step in building resilience against social cyber threats. It is crucial to understand and be aware of the relationship between technology, human behavior, and society to stay safe.
