I am interested in cybersecurity technology for quite a few reasons.

The first reason is simply because I am looking to switch my career. Cybersecurity has been touted as being a well-balanced career by people I have spoken with who work in the field. What they meant by that is that cybersecurity jobs typically have a better work life balance and a good stress to income ratio. They don’t feel stressed about work when they clock out, the pay is slightly above average, and it typically does not require much if any overtime. This allows cybersecurity professionals more time at home to be with their family, which is something I covet as someone who has frequently been working sixty plus hours a week for the last few years.

The second reason I am interested in cybersecurity is to protect myself and others. I see examples everyday in the news of people being taken advantage of by criminals and as a result they lose their time, their money, their identity, or even worse a combination of all three. In my own experience I have had to change credit cards twice because somehow, someone was able to gain access to it and put charges on my account that obviously I didn’t make. Thankfully it only took a few weeks to sort out and all of my money was returned to me. But that was only resolved so quickly because my bank had a strong policy in place to deal with cybercrimes. Another example of someone close to me being targeted was that my grandmother was called by someone pretending to be me. They claimed to be her grandson and said they were in jail and they needed her to send them bail money. Again, thankfully, she didn’t fall for it and hung up to call my father to confirm if I was in jail.

My third and final reason is that I don’t want to be left behind. Technology moves very fast, and I am already scrambling to keep up. Who knows where we will be technologically in ten years.
