Cybersecurity is such a broad topic that reaches in to almost every facet of our society. For that reason, almost any profession or college major can be related back to the topic of cybersecurity in some way or another. I will start with an easy major to relate to cybersecurity, Personal Finance. What good is it to be a personal finance professional if you cannot protect your client’s data? As a personal finance analyst, you are responsible for the assets of multiple people. You have access to most if not all of their personal information, potentially including banking information. Keeping their data safe should be of the utmost importance. Psychology is a very important aspect of cybersecurity because understanding how humans think and operate is quintessential to making technology operate more effectively and become fully integrated into our lives. Psychology also comes into play when considering how those with ill intent might try to mount a cyber-attack. Religious studies or philosophy are important for understanding particular ethical dilemmas that arise when companies or organizations are developing new technologies or policies that effect an end user’s data privacy and protections. Or for lawmakers trying to balance the rights of the individual user versus the rights of an organization when deciding on new laws to govern technology, cyberspace, and user data. Finally, a major and career I have experience with is Recreational Therapy. As a recreational therapist I dealt regularly with patients and their medical records. I was governed by HIPPA regulations and had to constantly guard against inadvertently doing something that would put patient data at risk. My point is that no matter what career path someone chooses it all comes back to cybersecurity in some way or another. So, we must all be vigilant and do whatever we can to safeguard ourselves, our families, and our organizations by understanding what part we play in cybersecurity.
