For chemistry class, I listen to the lecture and try to grasp the concept of the material we are covering. I will jot down some important key points that she makes or examples that she does. I then go home and write down the powerpoint notes to review what I learned during the lecture and make sure I really understand what we are learning. For English class, the only assignments that we do are journal entries and sometimes essays. So, during the class, I just listen and take notes on what she is talking about. I then will go home and read any assigned reading from the textbook to understand what she will be covering next in class, and I will work on my journal entry. For history, I will take notes on what she is talking about and be sure to write down key points that she makes. I’ll then go home and work on the discussion board using my class notes.I will also look over the assigned readings to make sure I have a basic understanding of the material we will cover in the next class period. For sociology, I will take notes of key points in class. When I get home, I will then take notes on the chapter and complete any pre-quizzes, which I use as study guides because they are not graded. For the chemistry lab, I just make sure to complete the labs to the best of my ability. At home, I will do the pre-labs, look over the lab for next class so I know what to expect, and complete the post lab to review what I completed in class. Lastly, for health professions, I will listen in class to all the material covered, and when I go home I will complete any assignments that are due.
My English class is my most successful class as of now. English has always been my strongest subject. My English class mostly consists of journal entries and essays. I like journal entries because you can not necessarily be wrong. It allows you to write freely without being penalized. I make sure to write in my planner all of my assignments, so I can stay on top of my work. I read the assignments before I go to English class, so I am fully prepared for what we will be talking about.
History has been the biggest struggle for me. I can not get fully engaged in the discussions during class because history does not interest me all that much. To study for this class, I will challenge myself with practice quizzes about the specific time period we are studying to ensure I can grasp what is happening. I need to set about an hour a night aside to study each night. I tend to obtain the most knowledge around 6:00-8:00pm. This is going to be my prime time to study for this class. I need to spend more time studying the Acts, regulations and the movements, because that is where I struggle the most. To study for my exams, I review after each unit, and then I will review the material two nights before and the night before the exam. I will read my notes on the sections that will be on the exam and make flashcards if there are terms that I have to remember. I have not been using the learning support to its extent. I find that for me personally, I learn and study better by myself. I have definitely hit a wall with my motivation for studying. I feel as if she throws everything at you at full force all at once, which makes me lose motivation. I know all of the classes are a point in the direction of my goal of being a nurse, which has to be enough to keep me going. I do not have any confusion in this class, I just find it harder to study and learn a topic that does not interest me. The exams in history are essays, where we can use our notes. It’s not really something that I have to study all that much for. I just review my notes before to make sure I do not have any questions about any of the material covered. I think that worked for me on this exam. We have not gotten our grades back yet. One thing that did not work so well was not reviewing all the material from the beginning of the class. We had some things to write about in our essay that I had forgotten, so I need to make sure I review all of the covered material, not just the recently covered material. We have not gotten our grades back yet, so I am not sure what I did not answer correctly.
A technique that I think I should use in class would be strategies for developing listening skills. I often find myself thinking about the most random things in class, especially in history. Being able to stay focused during the discussion will be a huge help for me. I will not have to spend as much time at home reviewing and studying what she covered because I will have heard it already, and hopefully remember it. One new technique that I am going to use outside of class that I think would benefit me the most is online tutoring. Personally, if I go to a tutor in person, I often get sidetracked by my surroundings and cannot focus. If I do online tutoring, I will be in my room with a familiar environment, so I will not get distracted as easily. I think this would benefit me a great amount in chemistry and history.
