Pre-Semester Reflection

Health Professions

Self Assessment

My current study methods vary for each course I’m taking at the moment. Starting with my Chemistry class I take notes in class while our professor goes over the point point slides for the topic we’re on. I usually look over my notes before class and while completing the homework. I plan to go to the review days outside of class before our exams to give me a little extra help before any big grades. Chemistry Lab the most I say I study is when I complete the pre and post labs. For my Sociology class I also take notes in class while the professor is presenting the power points. In Sociology our professor gives us quizzes on Blackboard each week to review the topics we go over in class to help us study. I try to complete the practice quizzes each week but sometimes I have to prioritize over classes first. Outside of my Sociology class I like to meet up with friends from the class and work together because that’s what helps me learn the material best. In English class I don’t really study. My professor gives us reading and writing assignments we have to complete throughout the week but we haven’t had any tests or information to study. My Algebra class takes up the majority of my free time when it comes to studying. Currently we use Aleks to study for Algebra and that takes about at least 2 hours a day to complete. Lastly In Health Professions to study I go to Blackboard and check the syllabus outside of class to see what events and assignments we have coming up.

I think the class I’m doing the best in at the moment is English because it’s the easiest thing for me besides Health Professions. I’ve always been a writer so I think I’m most comfortable in this subject. My study tactics for this class is just to complete the assignments on time meaning I work on them a little each day throughout the week until they are complete. In some classes I like to put off work because I’m not sure how to complete it so then I end up getting stressed out because it will be due soon and I haven’t even started.

The class I think I’m not doing the best at is Chemistry and Chemistry Lab. At the moment my study routine is not really not in place. I look over my notes from class sometimes but not enough where I feel like it’s useful to me. I probably study for 4 hours a week on Chemistry when I could be studying at least 6 hours a week. I have the motivation to do well in Chemistry and Chemistry Lab but I get discouraged when I don’t understand a topic. Just recently on Monday I took the first exam for Chemistry. I studied as much as I could before the exam to try and understand the material I was struggling with and I feel like I did well with the exam for the most part. In the future I’m planning on attending office hours for this class and review days to better help me prepare for exams and assignments.

A new technique to study I could use is the MSRC which is the Math and Science Resource Center. They offer free in-person tutoring that could be helpful for me throughout all the science courses I have to complete. This would be an easy way for me to get extra help on topics I need from a third party.

Outside of class I think I can do better at reviewing what I learned in the lecture instead of just skimming through my notes. I think If I did a better job at understanding what we just discussed instead of just writing it down I could feel more confident when exam time comes around.
