About Me

My name is Heather Mitcham and this is my first psychology course that I am taking at Old Dominion. Prior to transferring to ODU, I attended Tidewater Community College. I’m a Virginia Beach native, and it shows because I love going to the beach as much as possible. When I’m not working or spending time outside, I like to paint and create different types of art. I also have an (almost) two year old son named Luca and a pit/lab/husky mix named Blue.

As far as academics go, I am working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Arts with a minor in Psychology. Upon completing that, I am going to continue my studies at Eastern Virginia Medical School. I plan on earning my Master’s Degree in Art Therapy. Once I have become an accredited Art Therapist, my main goal is to work in mental hospitals and adolescent residential treatment facilities. I’m interested in psychology because not only is it endlessly fascinating, but also because understanding how the mind works enables me to help others. I chose this class specifically because I want to do a lot of group work once I become an Art Therapist. Gaining a deeper understanding of how people interact with one another will help me achieve this goal.
