Blog 10:

In blog 1, I described my course expectations. I stated that I wanted to gain a better understanding of behaviors as a result of social interactions and influences. I feel confident in my achievement of the course objectives. I hoped that this class would help me to understand and communicate efficiently with future patients, and I believe that what I learned as a result will greatly benefit my career. I have a better understanding of behavior and perception of others. I have gained a newfound respect and interest about Social Psychology. Originally, I thought that the class would boring, but as we dove deeper into the topics, I found that I enjoyed studying and learning the information. If I took the class again, I would have started my assignments earlier in the week in order to reduce stress. Lastly, I gained more confidence in my writing abilities because of this class. The many writing assignments challenged me, and I will be able to utilize this in my professional life and the rest of my college career. The image below represents how relieved I feel that my summer classes are almost finished. I am excited to have a little break before starting the fall semester.

Heuristics were a concept that I enjoyed learning in this class. They are forms of reasoning, or mental shortcuts, in order to make decisions. These impact my everyday life.  As heuristics play a role in my problem-solving skills, they influenced what I wrote for my e-Portfolio assignments. Social perception was another topic that was a significant to me. Seeking to understand others’ behavior, forming perceptions, and understanding different forms of communication had a great impact on my ability to interact with others. The last topic that I found to be interesting was understanding the nature and origins of stereotyping. Stereotypes do not often change between groups, and the formation of them are based on inferences.

Blog 6 can be related to assignment 2. In assignment 2, I looked at pictures of myself and described how they represented my perceived self-image and self-concept. I noticed how hyperaware I looked in posed photos of myself. Worrying about my image and insecurities was evident in my pictures. In blog 6, I wrote about harmful ads that promote unrealistic standards of women by manipulating the images of women. Ads and products that promote unhealthy behavior is detrimental to the mental health of women of all ages. These behaviors that I perform when taking photos is a result of worrying too much about image. Sadly, our society preys on these thoughts that teenage girls have over their bodies.

Sternberg’s triangular model of love can be related to relationship frames in my developmental psychology class. While his three components of love make up passion, intimacy, and commitment, frames determine how dependent individuals are towards one another in relationships. The relationships status between lovers has an impact on future development and growth of individuals. The image below is a representation of how I learned about the connection we have towards one another through social psychology.

The article regarding mating and sexual conflict was interesting. When preparing to get married, too many couples focus on planning for the wedding, but they neglect to plan for the marriage itself. Human desire and lust often cloud our judgement. According to the article, sexual conflict is formed before the relationship, during, and after. It is sad that even while in a relationship, insecurity and doubt pervades the mind. It is creating problems that don’t exist. Most men upset women by being unable to communicate their emotions. They often expect women to completely raise the children, and they neglect to take responsibility in caring for the children. Women upset men by refusing sex when they assume it is expected. Men also get annoyed when women nag or take control when in a relationship.

Self-regulation is the ability to regulate and understand one’s emotions, behavior, and actions. This process is often used in order to manage behavior in stressful or overwhelming situations. Emotional intelligence is the awareness of one’s emotions. It determines your ability to choose how to respond to and express emotions. To me, emotional intelligence means that I can manage my own emotions in order to empathize and communicate my feelings in a healthy manner. An example of how I display emotional intelligence is by accepting criticism and taking responsibility. I do not let it affect me negatively, but I learn and grow from it.

Blog 6:

I have noticed before that ads manipulate people to buy their products by dehumanizing and distorting the image of women. Ads everywhere promote unhealthy and unrealistic standards of women. When scrolling through Instagram, every other post is an Instagram model advertising a health supplement or product. They essentially say that if you buy this product, you can look like me. Though most of these women are digitally altered, have plastic surgery, and are not what the average woman looks like. It is detrimental to the mental health of teenage girls on the internet. Young women grow up thinking that they need to always look like these images, yet this is unrealistic and harmful. It causes negative body image, anxiety, and depression. Each image is a portrayal of the harmful representation of women’s bodies to sell a product. Image 1 suggests that you need a perfect, slim body in order to be ready to wear a bikini to the beach. Images 2, 3, and 4 are selling products that promote unhealthy ways to get a smaller waist without feeling guilty about eating. Image 5 shows a woman’s unshaved leg being shaved for a razor ad. Razor’s need to shave hair.

The first ad regarding Sensodyne toothpaste is an example of an ad with a credible source. It states that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend this brand of toothpaste. A dentist is an expert on oral health. Therefore, one is considered a credible source that will promote trustworthy oral hygiene products, like this brand of toothpaste.

The second ad for Fit Tea is an example of an ad without a credible source. Kylie Jenner is paid to advertise this tea that promotes weight loss. She states, “Using @fittea before my shoots is my favorite.” This is misleading because these fat loss teas have ingredients that cause one to use the bathroom often. Kylie is also an influencer, not a registered dietitian who would be a legitimate source to promote health products.

The third ad for a burger is an example of an ad with an attractive source. Since this ad easily catches your eye and attention, it has a greater effect in attracting the customer to buy the product. In the case of this burger ad, it clearly shows a visually appealing image of the burger. Every ingredient is shown to be appreciated, and the slogan saying, “Good things have a way of coming together,” gives more incentive to buy the product.

I am very proud of the grade I received on the first exam! When reviewing the questions I got wrong, I noticed that it was usually when I second guessed myself. I need to remember to trust my initial answer, unless I recall the correct answer. For my future notes, I plan on diving deeper into the concepts. I want to attempt to write my own examples in order to help for the next exam. Further, like when I studied for the first exam, I will utilize the following study tips: taking notes as I read the textbook, drawing concept maps, and spending more time on the review sheet. When preparing for the next test, I need to plan and prioritize my time better. I have the bad habit of cramming the day before and having an overload of information. While this works sometimes in my favor, I’m not necessarily learning the information. Sometimes I am just memorizing in order to receive a good grade, but this does not benefit me for the future. Studying the information throughout the course will allow me to have a better, long-lasting understanding of the concepts, and I will be able to apply the information learned in this class to real life circumstances. The image below represents the stress and anxiety I feel when I cram the night before a test.

Music is a beautiful way to establish connections with others. The emotional rush that comes with listening to a good song connects peoples experiences as they relate to the lyrics. I have found that I share similar music preferences with my friends, and we tend to share similar values and ideas. With a romantic partner, I will often have different music taste, but by being introduced to theirs, I will expand my own. Learning more about them through their love of music helps me to better understand them. The image represents a visual interpretation of how music connects individuals.

I would greatly consider myself a hardworking student. Though, most of that hard work happens at the last minute. I have the bad habit of procrastination, but I will not allow myself to submit assignments late. Luckily my classes all have due dates, so I must get my assignments done at some point. When it comes to schoolwork, I apply myself and attempt to produce my best work each time. Currently, I am proud of my grades and GPA, but to increase my confidence levels, I need to practice better time management skills. If I am able to start assignments early, stress is reduced, and I can put more effort into better quality work. My total score for the General Self-Efficacy Scale was a 28, so my mean score was a 2.8. I felt fairly confident in my ability to accomplish the tasks provided, and my score reflects my potential ability. I am optimistic in my ability to overcome the potentially difficult demands of life.

From this class, I hope to use the course objectives to help me in my future career. I am currently studying to become a dental hygienist, and the objectives learned in this class will allow me to understand and effectively communicate with my future patients. Understanding how attitude relates to behavior, the formation of relationships, and connecting these learned experiences to real life situations will greatly benefit my career and my perception of people around me. My expectations for this course are positive! I hope to gain a better understanding of behaviors of individuals as a result of social interactions and influences. As a dental hygienist, I want to integrate what I will learn from this psychology class. Building a friendly relationship, eliminating fear, and creating a comfortable environment for patients is my main goal, and I believe that applying the psychological topics like prejudice, discrimination, and group dynamics to social problems will help me to meet this goal. Since this is an online class, I need to be more mindful of my time. At the beginning of each school week, I hope to designate my assignments and study times to specific days of the week in order to not overwhelm myself. I want to dedicate this summer semester to practicing good time management and self-discipline.

I chose this meme because it is a funny example of the availability heuristic that was taught in chapter 2 of the textbook. This heuristic relies on memories as immediate examples in order to make decisions. It often uses fear to instigate these thoughts, much like the meme. Though the disadvantage to this form of reasoning is that it allows immediate judgments.
