Each student completes a&nbsp;<strong>400-hour, one-semester placement<\/strong>&nbsp;(fall, spring, or summer) in a community service setting aligned with their interests and location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Direct Contact Hours (100 minimum):<\/strong>&nbsp;one-on-one, by phone, in a group, or shadowing a professional with a client.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indirect Hours (remaining hours):<\/strong>&nbsp;administrative responsibilities, attending meetings, case notes, and other appropriate activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Volunteer Hours:<\/strong>&nbsp;up to&nbsp;<strong>50 hours<\/strong>&nbsp;from the prerequisite HMSV 368 Volunteer Experience may be counted toward indirect hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time they begin internship, students have completed their core Human Services coursework, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Interpersonal Relations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human Services Methods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversity Issues in Human Services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Case Management &amp; Crisis Intervention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Program Development, Implementation, &amp; Funding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychoeducational Groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family Guidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And additional applied coursework in substance abuse, crisis prevention &amp; ethics, and other areas of practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means interns are&nbsp;<strong>ready for hands-on professional practice<\/strong>&nbsp;in human services settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supervisor Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Site Supervisor, you play a central role in the success of the internship. Supervisors must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Hold a&nbsp;<strong>master\u2019s degree in a related field<\/strong>&nbsp;OR a&nbsp;<strong>bachelor\u2019s degree with at least 5 years of experience<\/strong>&nbsp;in human services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide&nbsp;<strong>ongoing supervision, consultation, and evaluation<\/strong>&nbsp;of the intern\u2019s performance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct&nbsp;<strong>at least one full hour of direct supervision per week<\/strong>, focusing on client interactions, professional behaviors, ethics, and diversity awareness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete&nbsp;<strong>midterm and final evaluations<\/strong>&nbsp;of the intern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review and sign&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/hmsvsitedirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32424\/2025\/09\/HMSV-Weekly-Log-Fillable.pdf\">weekly logs<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to verify intern hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For full details about all roles and responsibilities, please see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/hmsvsitedirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32424\/2025\/09\/HMSV-Internship-Agreement-Form.pdf\">Internship Agreement Form<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(outlines each person\u2019s responsibilities in supporting the internship) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/hmsvsitedirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32424\/2025\/11\/HMSV-Internship-Handbook-Updated-May-2025.pdf\">Internship Handbook<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(comprehensive guidance on requirements, processes, and expectations)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Site &amp; Compliance Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/hmsvsitedirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32424\/2025\/11\/HMSV-MOU.pdf\">Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;must be in place between the agency and ODU&nbsp;<strong>before<\/strong>&nbsp;internship hours can begin.\n<ul>\n<li>The Internship Coordinator will provide a template MOU and assist with the process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once an MOU is signed, your agency will be added to our&nbsp;<strong>Agency Directory<\/strong>&nbsp;for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/hmsvsitedirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32424\/2025\/09\/HMSV-Internship-Agreement-Form.pdf\">Internship Agreement Form<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;will be completed in signed by you in conjunction with the student.
