Mid-Semester Reflection

  1.  Study habits

I spend about an hour or two per day for each class I have the next day.  On Monday and Wednesday, I study for my classes on Tuesday and Thursday and on Tuesday and Thursday I study for my classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  My grades do reflect the amount of time I study.  I have mostly As and only one A- and one B+.  I could put more time into studying for my sociology class, which is my lowest grade.  I have the most trouble in this class because it is mostly memorizing terms and applying them to situations.  Sociology is one of my favorite classes because I do find it interesting, the hard part is applying what I have learned.  I am normally studying in the library but do sometimes get distracted by the people around me and the noise from Einstein’s Bagels.  To remove these distractions, I could study on the second floor instead because it is quieter up there. I am normally more focused during the middle of the day in between my classes.  I do sometimes study during this time if I am not having to catch up on some of my schoolwork.

  •   Learning style

I have used many study techniques this semester.  The best techniques for me to use are the practice quizzes and studying with a partner or two.  I have used new study technique, which is studying with a partner.  All through high school I wouldn’t study with other people because I found that they distracted me and would talk to me when I was trying to focus.  I study with my friend Girely because we are taking the same classes and we both do are work when together and we ask each other work related questions when needed.  My study techniques do vary from class to class. In my history class, I normally study my power points over and over and right them out, but for my Chemistry class, I take practice quizzes to help me learn the material.

  •  Transition to college

College was not what I expected it to be.  Before college started,

I was nervous about what it was going to be like and the schedule of my classes and the stress my classes may cause me.  Joining the learning community was the best decision I made going into college because it gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of people and make close relationships.  What has surprised me so far about far about this semester is the opportunities all of my professors have offered me.  I have had the opportunity to go on field trips, get extra credit, and be able to have the opportunity to talk to my professors one on one.  My favorite thing about campus is the different places I can go to to study or meet with my friends.  I am able to choose different places in the library to study; my favorite places would have to be the comfy chairs downstairs or the tables on the second floor where it is really quiet.  My toughest challenge so far is time management in the morning.  Once or twice I have been late to class by a few minutes because I choose to the leave the house at a later time.  I live thirty minutes away from ODU, so I have to make sure I leave with enough time to get to class on time in case of traffic, finding parking in the garages, and walking to class.

  • Connecting to campus

One problem I have faced his semester would be having a place to go to to work with a large group where there would be no interruptions from the people around us.  A resource I have used to help me is the study rooms in Perry Library.  I am able to rent a room for up to two hours and have the people in my group meet with no interruptions. Professor White has helped me this semester by taking time to review and answer any questions I have about our exams or any class assignments.  I am able to meet with her after class and email her if I have any follow up questions.  Professor White always responds in a timely manner when I email her.   I have attended the interest meeting for Young Life at ODU.  I decided to get involved so that I could meet new people and have a place to go to spend time with friends.  I also did Young Life Capernaum all four years in high school and really enjoyed it so I figured I would like it here too.  I now attended a small woman’s group, which is branched off from Young Life, that is full of girls who also commute to ODU.
