Assignment Five: Journal Article Critique

This assignment was really interesting, I truly did not think that I would enjoy doing it mostly because it is a journal article critique and that meant that I had to read an entire article which if i’m being honest is not something that I often enjoy doing. However, this was interesting because the extra layer was added about choosing an article having to deal with a place that you would consider a dream vacation. I chose gender as my topic and Scotland as my vacation destination. Looking through the articles I found the best one which was about how men usually drink more than women but it seemed that women were starting to drink more then men or as the article put it “drink like men”. I learned alot through this assignment about how the culture in Scotland is different but also not that different, by that I mean that it is different because the drinking age is different and they drink way more over there but it isn’t that different in terms of traditional gender norms and gender roles, I guess you will find those everywhere.

Higlhand Coos: this is a highland cow and they are native to Scotland, they are so interesting to me and are definitely one of the main reasons I would like to go to Scotland

Assignment Four: Gender and Representation 

I actually really enjoyed this assignment, I have never really thought to think about how advertisments are stereotypical and foucus so heavily on gender norms. Such as with advertisments for cleaning products, They usually try to appeal to the women perspective, more specifically the married woman with children perspective. They do it either by having “sexy” men being featured or just flat out saying “ladies” or “moms”. This is something that I feel should be changed because there are multiple men who use cleaning products as well as single women or women who choose not to or are not able to have children. This is similar to something that I learned about in my psychology of sex class where gender norms as we know them are starting to become outdated and morphed to become more modern and inclusive which I feel is great!

This is an example of an ad that utilizes gender norms to target moms.
