Artifact 5:
The United States’ scores seem to be fairly average among the other countries. In terms of America and the people of America the scores seem to be accurate. Americans are definitely individualistic and indulgent; I do find it interesting that Italy’s score for masculinity is higher than America’s.

Something that I found interesting in Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are” was when she started talking about non verbal gestures of power. I noticed that in the animal kingdom a lot of animals when they want to seem strong or scary they try to make themselves bigger however I never noticed that people, like humans, also try to show power that way but now it makes since. I also found it interesting that even people who were born blind do the “pride” power pose because it shows that some nonverbal instincts are natural and you do not have to learn them. A connection that can be made between the text and Amy’s lecture is how she talked about how a lot of the things that we as humans do are also done in the animal kingdom, for example gaze / gazing.
These are my prominent body language I usually just do it because it is kind of just a relaxed pose but it turns out it is a power pose.
Artifact 3:
It was hard to pick the most significant experience in my childhood that helped me form my present “self.” So I thought back and I thought about the time where I realized christianity was not for me and that you should treat everyone with love and respect. One day I was in church and the pastor was talking about homosexuality and how it was a sin and if you don’t repent and change your ways than you are going to burn in hell eternally. I was sitting in the pew and began to cry because I knew that I was attracted the same sex as me as well as the opposite sex and I knew that I couldn’t help it but I prayed for god to take the feelings away but I still had them and that’s when I realized that these feelings are natural and not bad because why would god give me something that would send me to hell and not take it away when I prayed for him too? The values of my culture are reflected in the drawing because a lot of the African American community’s views and values are based off of the values in christianity.
Artifact 2:
I found this assignment to be very interesting because I actually expected to not have any values in common with my parents however we did have one that was similar, “We should change our communication style depending on who we talk to and the context in which we are.”. I feel like this is something that my parents taught me that is actually so important not only for adult life and a career aspect but also as an African American living in today’s America. Every other statement were all discrepancies and I feel like the reason that I don’t agree with them is that my parents grew up in a different time and did not go to college so they did not have the wealth of knowledge that there is now and because of that they are stuck in their ways.

The reason that I selected this item is because this film “Paris is Burning” is the perfect representation of black LGBT+ culture. It talks about how it began and what it was like in the 80s/90s. Although I was born in ‘96 it still shows what black LGBT culture is like and what we go through even to this day. I feel like when most people think about culture they just think about their race or ethnicity but being apart of the LGBT+ community affects me almost as equally as being apart of the African American community.
I like this archive the most because it is something that is very important to me, I am proud to be a member of the LGBT+ community and more importantly the Black LGBT+ community and this film is what I would consider to be my favorite film.
