Blog 10:

When rereading my first blog post I do not see much of a difference in how I felt about the course then than I do now. Well, maybe a slight difference, initially I thought this course would talk about different cultures and their way of life in relation to psychology but in actuality this course is about psychology and the way other cultures view it in comparison to us which honestly is a little bit more interesting because it is more relatable. I believe that I successfully achieved all of the course objectives, What I would do differently if I took this class again is to make sure that I take on it’s own meaning not with three other classes because this class has so many interesting and important elements that you have to devote alot of your time to it. One way that I have academically grown over the last couple months is that, because of these blog posts, I learned how to really go through and reflect and pick out important elements of things that I learned . One skill that I gained from this course that I can use in my professional life is the idea of self enhancement, that is something that I can use in my career to help clients improve the way that they view themselves.

Procrastination no more: This represents my academic growth because I have a huge problem with procrastination, although I am still working on my procrastination, I am getting better control over it and I call that growth

Throughout this course I have actually learned a lot about different cultures. I would have to say my top three things that I have learned are (1) That I am more independent meaning that I identify more with traits of the independent self. (2) That gender roles and gender norms play a large role in pretty much everything (3) That autonomy is something that is an important part of being human and that there are even some humans who do not have it. The concept of gender that was discussed in Blog 7 applied to my assignment takeaway for assignment 4, In that blog post I talked about how women are often seen as weak and need a man to take care of everything and in the assignment takeaway I talked about how a lot of the advertisements that are catered to women are often for cleaning products and other things that almost degrade women and make them seem like they are only good enough to be homemakers. A concept that I have learned in this course that relates to another course is Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, in this class it talks about how the child learns by paying attention to their surroundings and in Family Guidance we learn that this is why it is important to inform parents that they are more important to their child’s development then they even know, so if they are going to argue in front of their child they need to afterwards explain to their child what happened and how it was resolved but obviously in language that the child can understand.

Digital Folder: This is the folder that I use on my computer for this course, This is how I organize my Assignments, notes, and other things necessary for this course.

Among cultures, one of the major things that differentiate them is the way that emotions are expressed. I have experienced this both first hand and my friend has also told me how he has experienced it. I worked at a grocery store for six years of my life, it was in fact my very first job, but I am sure it can be imagined how many different cultures you see while working at a grocery store.  An experience that I remember is one time when I was working at the Starbucks in the grocery store a customer (who was from a foreign culture but I am not sure what culture they were from) ordered something and the person taking the order wrote the order down incorrectly. So I made the drink how it was written on the cup, which was not what the customer wanted, however when I gave it to them and they took a sip I could see on their face that it was not what they were expecting and when I asked if there was something wrong with it they explained that the drink was not what they ordered but it was okay and they will drink it anyway, I insisted that I make the drink over but they kept saying that it was ok and that they were sorry for bringing it up. What I gathered from this interaction is that in their culture it is impolite to complain or display that you are unhappy with something and it is [possibly] seen as ungrateful even though the customer was displeased with his drink.

Asian Female Laughter: I chose this image because in a couple of asian cultures female often have to cover their mouth when they laugh or even smile. I find it interesting that in some cultures women have to express their enjoyment in other ways than men do.

Blog 7:

I really like this blog topic because I feel as though it is something that is always being discussed now a days on social media sites such as twitter. In short yes, I do feel as though classic fairy tales all share and reflect the same set cultural of cultural and gender norms and though they were “accurate” at the time they are now mostly outdated. Many women are tired of damsel in distress story line because it shows them as weak and dependent on men. A more egalitarian main character would be an amazing thing for the upcoming generations, a good example of that is Mulan, in the story she denies normal cultural and gender norms and fights in the “army”. That helped show little girls that that it doesn’t matter if your a girl you are just as strong as the boys. An example of a movie with a main character that positively influenced me is the pursuit of happiness, the dad character (will smith) was the main character and even though he didn’t have a lot of money he never let his son go hungry he always found a way to provide and that positively influenced me be always find a way to get to where you want to be.

Inclusivity: This image is of the Rodgers and Hammerstein cast of the movie Cinderella it’s shows inclusiveness of different backgrounds and cultures and shows that interracial families exist.

I find autonomy to be a very important aspect of being a free thinking human, In terms of education and academics I often use autonomy. To satisfy my need for autonomy academically I do a couple of different things, in online classes, I always make sure that I am ready mentally to do an assignment whenever one is due. I also know that sometimes I need to do some assignments early and ahead of their due date because of that. Another way I satisfy autonomy is that I take a break when I need it because I do not want to get burnt out. How I satisfy the need for competence is that if I ever do not understand something I will google it so that I can get a better understanding of what ever that thing is so that I can be competent enough to do the assignment.

Look It Up: Whenever I feel as though I am not fully grasping a topic even after reading the textbook, I will look it up to see other ways that the topic can be broken down so that I can get a more in depth understanding and feel that I can be competent enough to complete tasks involving the said topic.

Based on the the 10 statements asking the question “who am I?” I have figured out the following; I am a 1. Black 2. Kind 3. Bisexual 4. Hardworking 5. Loving 6. Easy Going 7. Good Listener 8. Funny 9. Male and 10. Honest. The statements or traits that I feel are associated with the dimension of “independent construal of self” are numbers 1, 3, and 9. The statements or traits that are associated with “Interdependent construal of self” are numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10. I would say that based on the aforementioned statements that I am more interdependent. Independent Self is more the traits that you feel that you have that do not rely on other people, for example I am always going to black whether I am around anybody or not. Interdependent Self is the traits that you feel that you have that or more reliant on or for others, for example, I am a good listener however that benefits other people more than it benefits myself, when I am actively listening to people I feel like thats what I should be doing as if it is my role. I think that it was easier to come up with proverbs that reflect the “independent self”, I feel like that is because the independent self is undeniably you so it easy to describe that aspect of yourself as opposed to the parts of yourself that are more dependent of others.

Bi Pride: This is the bisexual flag, I chose this image because it took a while for me to feel comfortable expressing this part of myself but it is a very important part of myself that I have recently come to terms with and am proud of.

When studying for this exam the review sheet was helpful. I have always had trouble studying in traditional ways, such as note taking, so the review sheet was helpful because it made me able to narrow down exactly what things that I need to go over. I did okay on the Exam however I did get some questions wrong, What is interesting is that these are the questions I remember feeling weary about when I was taking the exam. Looking up the answers to the questions that I got wrong helped because it gave me a chance to see how my studying can be improved and realize that I should next time try a combination of note taking and review sheet studying so that I can have a greater chance at the exam questions.

Motivation : The image that I chose to insert into this blog is a screenshot of my exam score. The reason that I chose this image is because this is motivation that hopefully on the next test it will say 100 out 100 points because I am changing the way that I study for the next test.

Considering the career field that I want to go in to is Human Services I feel like one of the most important things to consider is how my life values would affect my career. One of my life values that I feel like are relevant to my career pursuits would be the one that is known as the golden rule “Treat other how you want to be treated”. I feel like this is something that you should go in to every situation thinking especially when dealing with clients, It is important to be able to understand that sometimes you are the only person that the client feels comfortable talking to about their situation so you need to be mindful to treat them so that if you were in their shoes you would also want to talk to you about your issues. That is pretty much the only life value that I have other than “Don’t judge someone until you know their story”. However, that may tie into treat others how you would want to be treated. The reason that I got in to higher education is because I really want to help people in life and in order to do that I have to get the appropriate training and education. Also I am a first generation college student and that is definitely something that is pushing me forward because that would be a big accomplishment for me and my parents, it would almost be like they are graduating too.

The Only One: I chose this image because these are the high school senior pics for me, my brother, and my sister. My brother and sister are twins and 6 years older than me. They both started community college after high school but ultimately dropped out to pursue other endeavors, However, I not only graduated from community college with an associates degree but I am now almost done with my bachelors degree and thats what is pushing me forward, Being not just the baby of the family but being the one that graduated college.

The objectives for this course will not only be helpful in a career in the Human Services field but will also be helpful in everyday life. I would say that the most helpful objective for both career and personal life would be “Develop greater understanding of people from other cultures and skills for successfully interacting with them.” In a Human Services career it is important to understand the culture of your client so that you can properly assist them and be respectful. In everyday life it also important to be respectful to other cultures and the only way to do that is to have a better understanding. I expect that this course will initially seem to be things that are common sense but will be full of new information that I had never even knew I needed to know. What I expect to get from this course is just that, a better understanding of other cultures, as well as knowledge on how some cultures come from and influence other cultures and the people in it. The strategies that I intend to implement to be successful in the course are making sure that I put important due dates in my calendar as well as making sure I read the chapters and actually retain the information.

The Family That Prays: The reason that I chose this image is for the Values section of Chapter 1, I grew up in a traditional christian black home where you go to church every Sunday and you go to Bible study every Wednesday. Most of the values that my parents taught me were based on christianity and from the Bible.
