Assignment Takeaway

Assignment Takeaway 5

For assignment 5, we were asked to do 5 kind things for strangers and write about each situation as well as the stranger’s reaction. We were also asked to write about how it made us feel. I really enjoyed doing this assignment because it made me feel like I was making the world a better place just by doing small things. I was nervous to do it at first but I soon learned that being kind is easy and it’s something that we should all do a little more often. Learning about how easy being kind can be related to my nervousness about creating the website for this class. When I first read the instructions about creating the website, I was very nervous because I had never done anything like that before, but once I started, I realized how easy it was and became more and more comfortable working on it. This was the way doing kind things worked as well. I was very nervous to start but once I did the first thing, I realized how easy it was to do. This assignment was personally relevant to me because sometimes I’m not the kindest person and learning how easy it was to be kind helped me to become a nicer person to my family, friends, and everyone else around me.

I added this picture because it is a picture of Harry Styles in the music video for his song “Treat People With Kindness”. This is relevant because our assignment was to treat people with kindness and every time I would get nervous to go and do something kind, I would hear this song in my head.

Assignment Takeaway 4

For the fourth assignment of the semester, we were asked to complete the Styles of Love Questionaire and then analyze our score in each of the six types of love: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, mania, and agape love. We were told to take the questionnaire and then compare our mean scores to those of the same sex. For the most part, I was pretty similar in answers to other males who had taken the questionnaire. I scored below other males’ mean in eros, stroge, and pragma type love. I scored above other males’ means in ludus and agape categories of love, and I scored almost identical to other males in the category of mania love. Reading the results was a bit confusing because a low mean meant you had a high level of that certain type of love and a high mean meant you had a low level of that certain type of love. Because of this, I concluded I had high levels of eros, storge, and pragma type love, I had a low level of ludus and agape type of love, and I had ana average level of mania type love. This assignment was personally relevant to me because it helped to show my levels of different types of love. It also gave me a better understanding into the types of love I may be better and showing and the types of loves and lovers I should try to avoid. The picture I selected is relevant to this assignment because it provides a visual representation into the types of love the questionnaire measured and what exactly those types of love mean.

Assignment Takeaway 2

The second assignment of the semester had us pick six different photos that we believed represented aspects of ourselves and write a summary of how each picture connected with different parts of ourselves. My biggest takeaway from this assignment is that we, as humans, have many different parts and roles we play in life. We are not just male or female human beings. Instead, we are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, moms and dads, friends, and so much more. To connect this lesson to something else I have learned, this assignment reminded me of playing football as a kid. We were taught that football is a team sport, each boy is capable of playing on his own, but the talent shows itself when he comes together with his teammates and plays as a team. We, as humans, can be compared to a football team in that there are multiple “players”, so to speak, in our definition of ourselves. The quarterback might be us as a child, the runningback is us as a sibling, the wideouts are us as friends. Each of these roles has an incredibly important job on the field and they must all work together to become a team, otherwise known as, our complete selves. This assignment was personally relevant to me because it was an assignment on myself. The pictures were my pictures and my summaries explained how each personal picture represented an aspect of me. The picture I selected is of a football team to represent my metaphor of how a football team represents each of us as human beings.

Assignment Takeaway 1

For the first assignment of the semester, we were told to provide a basic understanding of heuristics and provide an example of each of the four types of heuristics, as well as how heuristics can lead us to make inaccurate inferences about different aspects of life. The biggest takeaway I had from this assignment is gaining a better understanding of how heuristics are found in our everyday lives without ever being noticed by using examples that I, personally, came up with. Although it was difficult to do so, I now understand why it was such a major part of assignment one, because I have a much better understanding of where heuristics fit into our day-to-day lives. I still live at home with my family and one night at dinner, my sister used the representativeness heuristic without even knowing it. I can’t remember the exact details surrounding the use of it; however, I thought it was pretty incredible that I now could realize and interpret that she was using a heuristic and that an example of a concept I learned in class was being shown in my everyday life.

This is a comic I made to demonstrate how when we’re not looking for something, even though it may be there, we don’t see it. It often isn’t until we are looking for something that we notice it, just like how I am now noticing the heuristics around me every day when before learning about them, even though they were there, I never noticed them.
