It seems as though I was right on track with the course expectations. I feel as though I have gained a better understanding of how psychology is used in the world of sociability and being social and how this type of psychology affects people in the real world. I’ve learned about attitudes, behavior, discrimination, and much more. After looking back on the course objectives I feel like I have done well in achieving them. My attitudes about social psychology haven’t really changed. I was excited to take this course to learn about the contents of social psychology and I am now glad I took the course because I have a deeper understanding of humans’ behavior and attitudes. If I were to take the class again, I would take more detailed notes. I took notes with each chapter, but sometimes looking back on them when I was trying to study was confusing so I would take clearer notes to help myself when I was trying to study. Over the last few months, I have been able to grow academically in the virtual world. Making the word press site allowed me to better understand making a website and uploading information to the website so I would say that learning about word press and building the site there is a big way of how I’ve grown academically this semester. A skill I’ve learned in this course is how to handle discrimination. I want to be an I/O psychologist and they work with HR so being able to understand discrimination and why it happens will be helpful in my professional life.

The first top thing I’ve learned was all about heuristics. I really enjoyed creating the comic that went along with heuristics and doing that helped me to maintain my knowledge on that subject. The second thing was about the different types of love we experience. I thought this was interesting because I had never realized just how many ways love can be defined. Lastly, I enjoyed learning about how advertisements were so inadvertently sexist and unrealistic. I had never really realized it before watching the ted talk but I now see it. I really enjoyed the blog post where we had to choose a song to represent different relationships in our life. This is similar to the assignment where we had to find different pictures that represented different aspects of ourselves. Both of these assignments made us think deeply about different parts of our lives and connect those parts to a similar thing (songs and pictures). Lastly, the topic of the self that I learned in this class can be connected to the topic of sense of belonging that I am researching in my Research Methods in Psychology class.

After reading the article about sexual conflict and mating between a heterosexual couple, I would say I agree with a lot of what it says. Often, whether it pertains to sex or everyday life, men and women want and need different things, so this can most definitely cause stress in a heterosexual relationship since a heterosexual relationship does, in fact, involve a man and a woman. I would say men often upset women by being lazy or lying. When men get home from work, often they feel like just relaxing and this can upset a woman because more times than not, the woman is the one who comes home and cleans and cooks and this can be upsetting and frustrating if you are the woman who also worked all day and you have no help in doing household chores because your boyfriend or husband is being lazy. Lying is also something I see women get mad at men over a lot. It can cause toxicity in a relationship and is overall, something to be avoided. Men can become upset with women, whether it be their girlfriend or wife when the woman makes them feel small. If a woman insults a man, this can often make him feel defensive, and therefore, he is more likely to lash out, especially if he is insecure in himself. Lying is also a trigger for men just as much as it is a trigger for women. If a woman is lying to her boyfriend or husband, it suggests sneakiness and infidelity, just as it does when a man lies to his girlfriend or wife.

This is an example of a man being mad at a woman because he thinks she is lying and being sneaky so he is trying to read what she’s doing on her phone.

This is an example of a woman being mad at a man. He is laying down relaxing while she is frustrated that he is not helping out.

I would say emotional intelligence, or EQ is something that is important to me. It is important to maintain and grow your EQ as you become a more mature and intelligent individual. Being able to maintain your own emotions, as well as accurately read others’ emotions, is something that can help you be a better child, sibling, friend, coworker, and parent. All of the roles that a person may play in his or her life can be improved if said person works to try and raise their emotional intelligence. It seems as though after watching the video, self-regulation and emotional intelligence are strongly correlated. Using the example provided in the video, if you are cut-off in traffic, your emotional intelligence is going to help you become a bit more emotionally regulated after the initial fight or flight response has occurred. Ways of displaying your EQ include being sympathetic towards others’ needs and trying to maintain a high level of self-awareness. To help improve EQ, it would be helpful to observe how you react in certain situations and do a self-evaluation of these reactions. This will help you see exactly where your EQ could be improved and then work on self-regulation in high-stress situations to help raise your EQ. It is also important to work on taking responsibility for your actions. The more often you are able to do this, the better other people will feel heard by you and the better people feel heard by you, the higher your EQ will grow. Below I have added a screenshot of my EQ test results.

Watching the Ted Talk is something that I’m glad I did. I had known that women have been dehumanized in advertisements in the past, but I didn’t realize it was something that was still happening today. Although it is not as prevalent, it is still a problem and it is something that needs to be recognized in order to be stopped. Seeing some of the advertisements that run on tv screens and imagining my little sister being sexualized like that makes me sick so I feel as though it is something that deserves more attention. I was also interested and surprised to see how companies will manipulate certain aspects of a model in order for him or her to “fit the ideal image” better. This is just as harmful as sexualizing both men and women because it is perpetuating an unrealistic body image for young men and women which, in turn, is causing a rise in eating disorders. These advertisements are pushing the idea that skinny is the only way to be pretty by manipulating images so heavily that what we see is no longer a healthy body type for a person to have. Sexualization and body manipulation are things that need to be stopped both for the sake of the actor/model as well as for the viewers at home.

Overall, I learned that the questions that I missed were on topics that I didn’t spend very much time learning and understanding. The feedback I received helped me to understand what topics I may not have worked as hard at and reminded me that every topic is fair game to be on the test so it is important to study and make sure each topic is understood. I did augment my notes into a bit more of a Cornell notes fashion so it would be easier for me to find notes on a certain topic I didn’t yet feel comfortable with. I would put a broad one or two-word title for what the notes would entail on the left of the paper and then proceed to write my notes on that topic to the right. This made it easier for me to find a topic and may not have understood as well as the other topics and review my notes on that certain topic.

I used this image to represent my new style of note-taking. It illustrates where each section goes and what each section contains.

I agree with the author of the article. I feel as though music is a great insight into the type of person someone is. Some of my closest relationships have come out of liking similar artists in music. I have a certain very close-knit group of friends and we were introduced to each other through our mutual love of Harry Styles and his music. We talk every single day, whether it’s about him, or just about what’s going on in our life. We’re all around the same age and have a very similar, open-minded way of thinking and it’s really amazing how our admiration of a certain musician has brought us so close together. I’ve never met any of them face-to-face because we all live in different parts of the country, but I consider them some of my closest friends.
Mom- If I had to pick one song to associate with my mom, I would have to pick I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. She has always loved this song. Every summer, when we’re relaxing in the pool and having fun, we listen to it because it gives off such good energy. When I first started learning guitar, it was one of the first songs I learned, just so I could perform it for her.
Dad- I chose Monkey and the Engineer by The Grateful Dead to associate with my dad because he is an even bigger fan of the Grateful Dead than my mom is of Fleetwood Mac. When he was younger, he would travel around the country with them going to show after show. My mom is a teacher so she’d have to leave for work early in the mornings, so my dad was in charge of me every Monday through Friday morning when I was little and whenever he’d drive me to daycare, we would blast this song together; it was one of the first songs I knew all of the lyrics to.
Brooke- My sister, Brooke, has always had a knack for memorizing lyrics to songs very quickly. Bubbly was her and my dad’s “drop off song” just like how Monkey and the Engineer was mine and my dad’s. She was about three years old and she had the lyrics to this song memorized, she loved Colbie Caillat as a little girl and that is why I chose Bubbly to associate with my sister.
Tori- Out of the friend group I mentioned above, Tori is my favorite. We love talking to each other and she is one of the kindest people I know. Because of this, I picked “Treat People With Kindness” by Harry Styles. It is the perfect song to represent her because we met because we both love Harry and she is such a kind soul.
Harry- One thing- one direction Although it may sound a bit ridiculous, I see Harry Styles as a very important person in my life, even though I don’t have a personal relationship with him. He is one of the people who make me happiest and I smile every time I look at him. I chose One Thing by One Direction to associate with him because that is the first song I ever heard of his. Although it was not personally his, it belonged to the band he was a part of, and because that was my first time ever hearing his voice, I associate him with that song.
Myself- To represent my own life and its challenges, I chose Fine Line by Harry Styles. It is such an emotional song and it reminds me of a time in my life that wasn’t the greatest and it helps me to see just how much music can affect a person. One of the lyrics “We’ll be alright” I have tattooed on my arm because it reminds me that even though our toughest times seem like they will last forever, we’ll end up being alright.

GSE and Confidence Level
Results

I see myself as being a very hardworking student. I do not give up easily when it comes to school. Because of certain aspects of my personality, including my work ethic and my willingness to learn, I feel as though, overall, I am a pretty confident student. To increase my confidence levels, I would say I need to reduce the amount of procrastinating that I do. If I start doing my assignments with plenty of time to finish, this will lead me to create and submit a more well-thought-out assignment, leading to a better grade, leading to a higher confidence level in school. After completing the General Self-Efficacy Scale, or GSE scale, I was given a 29 overall score, or a 2.9 mean score. I feel as though this is pretty accurate in everyday life, but in school, I feel I am more confident than that.

I feel as though the course objectives will be very useful in the future. I am working to become an industrial-organizational psychologist. This deals with the psychology of work and how work affects our psyche. Gaining a better understanding of how people perceive others as well as how attitudes are formed and changed will help me be successful in the workplace as I will understand how the minds of the employees work when looking at it from a social perspective. I expect to learn how psychology is used in the world of sociability and to gain knowledge of how this affects people in the real world. I will be using the same strategies I use for all my courses. I will make sure I stay on top of my work and read the instructions for each assignment all the way through. If I have a question, I will utilize the TA’s for assistance and clarity.
Priming

I chose this image because it is an example of “priming”. Priming was a method we read about in chapter 2.2.2 of the book under the “schemas” section.
