What are the costs and benefits of developing cybersecurity programs in business?
I think the benefits of developing strong and comprehensive cybersecurity programs in business highly outweigh the costs involved with the development and implementation of said programs. In a digital age, it is becoming more and more imperative to have a pre-established plan for when, not if, your business suffers the effects of a data breach or cyberattack. The benefits of having a plan ahead of time is that the monetary loss and damage can be mitigated if the attack or breach is caught fast and timely. Investing in quality cybersecurity programs is a small cost compared to the potential losses other businesses that did not prioritize cybersecurity faced in the end. The cost suffered from a breach doesn’t only affect the business, but their customer base as well. The business’s reputation is then shot to the public, and it is extremely hard to gain that trust back. To me, the lack of care and seriousness towards the personal data of customers or their own private data of a business makes me not have any trust in them. This is unfortunately only shown to be true for certain companies after there’s a breach. The cost of implementing a cybersecurity program in your own business is not very expensive in general, especially if you compare it to the average loss of $4 billion companies face because of a breach. Most companies that I found that offered cybersecurity training for employees based the cost of their program on how many employees you have at your company. For smaller businesses, this cost will be a lot less than for a business with thousands of employees. It might be a little harder for small businesses for fork the cost of the program, but in my opinion, it is worth it to invest into it in the long run.
