How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
I believe that cyber technology impacts interactions between offenders and victims in many different scenarios. The first scenario I can think of, and the most common interaction I see online is the interactions between survivors of sexual assault and either sexual abusers or abuser apologists. There are multiple instances in which a conversation is started online about sexual abuse and the personal experiences of victims, and sexual abusers or apologists will interact back and blame the victims for what happened. These interactions have no productivity to them, as in my experience, its only people going back and forth with no one’s view being changed. Victim blaming is something that has always happened in media, even before the invention of the internet. But once social media started to be used more commonly, it is easier to talk with anyone about anything. In media, it was more of a one-way street as far as communication. On social media, you can search for and target specific topics to talk about all while having as much or as little “anonymity” as you would like. It gives some people the comfort and confidence to say what they typically would not say in person or out loud. In another sense, it is easier now more than ever for direct “victim-offender” relationships to happen online. What I mean by this is, an offender is likely to harass or stalk the victim online in retaliation of the victim speaking out about their abuse, or in order to keep them in fear to say anything about the abuse. It is a convenient and accessible way for abusers to continue to harm their victims. Technology can be abused in such a way for abusers to find new victims or to terrorize their current or past victims.
