My mother worked very hard as a solider in the United States Military. She was deployed often while I was younger. At certain points during my high school year, I had to obtain responsibility for my younger brother. It was very difficult for me to be a student in high-school, while assuming the responsibility for my brother. I often had to wake up three hours prior to school, to get my brother and I together for school. Once school was done for the day I drove my younger brother to basketball practice, then I went to work and after work I picked my brother from football practice and drove home to cook dinner for my brother and I.
My mother taught my brother and I that great things come with great sacrifices and that nothing comes to us for free. Due to her personal sacrifice it afforded me the opportunity to receive dependent financial aide through the military to afford to go to college at Old Dominion University. This was an incredible opportunity for myself and I never took it for granted. Being a Georgia native, I was often homesick. I fought through it to become the first grandchild out of eleven to graduate from college. The same year of my graduation I lost my grandfather, a man who meant the world to me. The senior year at Old Dominion University I had a balance on my financial aide.
My grandfather paid my balance off, weeks before his passing. I knew then that I would always cherish the scarifies my family made to make my college degree possible. My grandfather was admit about pursing an education. He was so proud of me when I enrolled into college, he came to my first university at Savannah State and told me how proud he was of me. I am so honored to be his granddaughter.
