In blog 1, I was tasked with discussing my course expectations and I define social psychology. Initially, my course expectations were to learn the science behind sociality and how to make connections between course material and the outside world. I hoped to gain a better understanding of origins, factors, and attitudes relating to social psychology. I intended to implement the idea of creating clear goals and executing actions needed to obtain success. As this semester is coming to an end, I feel like I was successful in achieving my goals. I developed a deeper understanding of what social psychology is and got to apply this knowledge to real world situations. My attitudes about a variety of subjects changed throughout the semester. As I got to explore topics in weekly assignments, I realized my initial thoughts were not always correct. One of the activities that really changed my attitudes was the self-regulation and emotional intelligence blog.

I feel as if his course will help me be better prepared for my professional life, especially when applying to grad school. Knowledge learned will help me a lot in social situations and think about situations in a different way. If I were to take this course again, I would have spent more time taking notes and been more prepared for exams.

I chose this representative image because not only does it illustrate an idea of psychology as a whole but really emphasizes the importance of social psychology. This class has helped me become more aware of my enviroment, challenged me to think in new ways, and accept change and growth.

Mating behaviors in humans are very vast. In addition to mating for reproduction, people often mate to spend the rest of their lives together. Males and females not only want sex, but they need sex. Traditionally mating is thought of in a heterosexual narrative. However, as sexuality and technology continue to grow there are other ways to help reproduction such as egg freezing, sperm donation, and hormone therapy. These are just a few ways to create new life.

Men and women are opposites, so they often attract. However, they also often upset each other. Sexual conflict can often be spotted at three main stages of the mating process. These stages include prior to consummation, after a relationship has formed, and after a breakup. One-way men upset women is when they brag about size and amount. Men often equate this to a powerful position in life.

On the other hand, women can also upset men. I think one of the ways women can upset men is when they don’t acknowledge their differences and claiming everything needs to change for there to be peace. I think men sometimes feel like the women can be demanding in their ways and men wish it could go back to marriages traditional roots.

As self-regulation relates to the ability to control one’s emotions, it can be assumed that those high in self-regulation also have high emotional intelligence. In order to control emotions, you have to know what emotions you are trying to control. However, this is not always the case. High self-regulation does not always equal high emotional intelligence. High emotional intelligence also includes the ability to interpret the emotions of others.

While high self-regulation can and often is related to high emotional intelligence, they are not exclusively linked. There are several exceptions. One of the questions that stood out to me while listening to the self-regulation and emotional intelligence podcast was why do high self-regulators want to control their emotions? In my personal meaning of high emotional intelligence, individuals must be able to recognize, express, and manage emotions within themselves and others. Therefore, people with high emotional intelligence would express emotions rather than regulate them.

Can be taken here : Emotional Intelligence Test – Global Leadership Foundation

This EI test used coded questions to measure emotional intelligence. Each quadrant is out of 10. Therefore, the higher you score, it is assumed the higher the levels of EI. My scores ranged between 6 and 9. I would agree with these scores. An example of why I agree with my scores is the relationships between my pets and I. I have 3 dogs and I have to rely on non-verbal cues such as behavior, body language, and emotions to determine their needs. Emotional intelligence can be improved by increasing awareness of others emotions and acting accordingly.

After watching Jean Kilbourne’s The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women via this link: https://youtu.be/Uy8yLaoWybk, I opened my eyes to how advertisements really impact people, especially women. This ad highlighted the idea that ads sell more than products. Women and young girls experience pressure to keep this “perfect image”. This image is typically described as appearing young, thin, and Caucasian. Photoshopping images has played a huge role in ads and can easily impact women’s self-esteem. I have found this to be a common problem in today’s society as people harm their health to meet a false expectation. What really shocked me the most was how ads can normalize harmful attitudes such as rape, assault, and abuse. Prior to this video, I knew ads could hurt women’s attitudes toward their bodies and esteem, but I didn’t understand how widespread this issue was. This motivated me to be confident in myself.

10 Examples of Women’s Portrayal in Ads, From the Good to the Bad to the Completely Sexist (adweek.com)

Art and About: The truth about beauty ads (moreartandabout.blogspot.com)

I chose these images as the visual representative image because these are examples of, how ads distort, stereotype, and dehumanize women and manipulate people to buy their products. Ads such as these can cause great self-esteem issues as well as normalize assault and abuse. In the first ad, it shows an image of a woman with the caption “Save The Whales Lose the Blubber. Go Vegetarian”. This ad shames women’s body’s that don’t fit the medias “attractive” look. The second ad also follows along with the medias need for “fit and slim” women. The third ad highlights another issue. The caption states “Look what he brought me”. This ad implies that women aren’t independent and rely on a man. Next, the fourth ad sexualizes women and can lead to men viewing women as objects. Finally, the last ad portrays the idea that you can’t be loved if you aren’t perfect. All these ads can lead to a variety of eating and self-confidence issues among women and young girls worldwide.

You can identify the credibility of a source by analyzing the source in the context of rules and by using common sense. Levels of credibility can vary between being credible, not credible, or simply attractive. I chose to use ads from one company to highlight differences in credibility. Using one company really emphasizes differences in the structure of the ad. Netflix is very popular but doesn’t mean everything about them is credible.

The first ad illustrates is credible because it connects a name to an individual and follows Netflix’s public branding. Netflix’s public branding is consistent which represents trustworthiness. This is an ad for a show on Netflix featuring comedian, Hannah Gadsby. This is seen as being directly tied to Netflix and states what it means. The second ad is an example of not credible source. This billboard has the words “Netflix Is A Joke” on it and many people were confused who the ad was meant to benefit. This left many people wondering if it was meant to promote Netflix or was a joke. The third ad shows a simply attractive source. This ad uses a third party, Merriam-Webster OnLine site to boost credibility. I think this ad was effective then as it appeals to a wide audience and is collaborative. Often people active on the internet are interested in tv shows and movies because of their common connection with media presence.

After reviewing exam one and finding the correct answers, I learned how to improve my study habits. In addition, I furthered my knowledge of material provided. Prior to class, I wrote notes from information on BlackBoard. I added extra details to my notes throughout class. When preparing for the test, I reviewed these notes and created flashcards to help with memorization. I used my planner to set aside time to review these flashcards weekly. I found this strategy to be highly effective for me, as I got an A on the exam. I plan to implement this technique for future exams and courses.

The image above represents one of the studying techniques I used to prepare for this exam. I would write down definitions of terms on flashcards and review those weekly. This technique helped me memorize definitions which helped me apply terms on the exam. I plan to use this technique on further exams.

After reading the attached article Soul Meets Body, I realized music is so varied as well as the people who create and listen to it. Traditional genres continue to grow, while new genres are being created with time. There is a connection between music and attraction. This is largely due because attraction is a driving force behind music creation. However, I think that it is easy to relate to other people’s music. When someone has a similar music taste, I feel more attracted to them. This may be due to the fact that there is a sense of comfort and similarity when someone shares the same music interest. I actively look for similar music interests in relationships and friendships. For example, my brother and I both enjoy a lot of country music and like similar artists. However, I also enjoy a lot of rap music with my friends. In the end, I realized that the more music interests you share with a person, the more likely you are to share similar values.

To illustrate how music embodies personalities, here is a playlist of my most recent listening and a person/part of myself for each song.

After taking the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), I really got to reflect on what kind of student I am. According to the text, self-efficacy is the tendency to have a high degree of self-confidence and the belief that one can accomplish the tasks that she or he sets out to perform. My results from the General Self-Efficacy Scale were 39 out of 40. This indicates a high sense of self-efficacy and can help explain what type of student I am. I would describe myself as a very hardworking, optimistic, and motivated student. The General Self-Efficacy Scale discusses how a high score indicates a sense of optimism. In addition, it states that a high score shows a sense of emotion and work satisfaction. My level of confidence within an academic setting is also relatively high. While taking the General Self-Efficacy Scale I selected “exactly true” for all of the statements besides “I can remain calm when facing difficulties because I can rely on my coping abilities”.  I could improve my ability to cope with stress to increase my level of confidence. For example, I could practice better stress management techniques such as improving time management and setting limits appropriately. Lastly, I realized self-efficacy plays an important role in task completion. Having a higher sense of self-efficacy has been shown to improve task completion for several reasons. One explanation is that individuals with high self-efficacy are likely to believe they will succeed at a specific task and will see a challenge as something to be mastered rather than a threat to be avoided. Self-efficacy can also reflect a strong sense of work satisfaction which also plays a role in task completion and overall engagement.

Old Dominion University Dean’s List Achievement

This image is a screenshot of one of my biggest academic achievements. I have made Old Dominion University’s Dean List for all three semesters I have attended the university. I feel like this image relates to the topic of Self-Efficacy and reflects what type of student I am. As discussed above, I scored highly on the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE). I am very confident in my academic abilities and ability to complete a task I set out to do. Factors such as self-efficacy play a role in my work completion. The Dean’s List certificate helps validate this idea.

After reviewing the course objectives outlined in the Course Syllabus, I realized how this course will benefit me in the future. In the Course Syllabus, some of the course objectives listed include outline the procedures social psychologists use to test hypotheses about the behavior of individuals and of groups, discuss the processes through which people perceive and attempt to understand others, and explain how attitudes are formed and changed, and how these attitudes are related to behavior. Achieving these objectives will help me in the future by enriching my understanding of myself and the world around me. In addition, my understanding of interpersonal and group dynamics and social challenges will be expanded. This knowledge can be beneficial to me in both personal and work settings when dealing with a variety of people. I expect to learn the science behind sociality and how to make connections between course material and the outside world. I hope to gain a better understanding of origins, factors, and attitudes relating to social psychology. Throughout the course, I intend to implement the idea of creating clear goals and executing actions needed to obtain success. For example, I hope to get a good grade on exams, so I plan on setting specific times to study material throughout the week.
