Parallel Major

  1. List your Parallel Major. Your Parallel Major must be an undergraduate degree offered here at ODU.

My first major chosen by the quiz is nursing, which is my chosen major. The second the quiz matched me with is Health Sciences Administration.

  • Why did you choose this as your Parallel Major? What interests you about this major?

I chose this because it still allows me to be in the healthcare atmosphere and interact with patients and medical staff. While this is not my main career goal, I believe this holds the capacity to get my foot in the door of the medical field, and after some time of being a healthcare administrator, I could go back and reapply for the nursing program. This major is interesting to me because it still allows me to be behind the scenes but still make a difference!

  • List some interesting facts about this major.
    • They coordinate medical service deliveries, oversee staff, manage insurance and billing, and ensure regulatory compliance.
    • They attend investor meetings on behalf of their facilities to assist with any questions and offer insight to how the facility runs and works.
    • The median salary in 2018 of all medical and health services managers is $99,730.
    • For difference in facility sizes, smaller facilities have healthcare administrators responsible for managing daily operations, while larger facilities can have healthcare administrators operating aspects regarding the operations global scale factors.
  • Research at least one career that you can do with this major and provide information on that career.

A clinical manager – manage clinical, professional, administrative and clerical staff. They ensure the needs of patients and staff are met across the board, and everything is up to regulation.

I still would need the same pre-requisites as nursing almost, however, I would need more classes in Written Communication, I would need to declare a minor.

  1. How could you gain professional experiences to learn more about this area of study?

I could go and volunteer somewhere and essentially shadow a Health science administrator. I could also talk to my mom’s friend, who is currently getting her Masters in Health Sciences Administration from the University of South Carolina. She is the director of Telehealth at Riverside Hospital (see interview) and loves what she does!
