I’ve learned several thing this semester of mostly online schooling. My research into heuristics was probably the most interesting subject. I enjoyed the chapters that talked about them, since I found it interesting how our mind’s can be incorrect without us being aware of a mistake. I think this subject plays into every aspect of life, since making decisions is a part of daily life. Another topic i found interesting were the human attitudes towards love. This was so interesting to me because i did not expect to take the love test, which showed me my attitudes toward love. Finally, the module on stereotyping and prejudice was interesting to read about, since this year we saw much racial injustice within our country. I’ve mentioned the use of heuristics in assignments outside this class. as an expample, the human tendecy for affluenza may be considered a heuristic. I believe that with the knowledge i’ve inherited in social psychology, i will be able to continue to be a free thinker.

Advertising is a major practice for businesses that want to spread the word about their products. Personally, I try to ignore advertising, however, businesses use marketing tactics like the use of symbolism which can engrain itself into one’s mind subconsciously. Products like men and women’s shampoo can be nearly identical in composition, but the name and packaging on the product are made to encourage individuals to buy their respective gender’s packaging. Women are frequently targeted with advertising that objectifies them negatively. An observation I had was that older advertisements had a tendency to be directly insulting towards women’s physical traits like weight, while newer advertising represents women as strong and beautiful. They often portray men and women in impossible conditions and even use photoshop to make models more appealing to consumers. This is dangerous in the fact that women are encouraged to look perfect beyond possible conditions, even though they have little control over their physical appearance. I find it interesting how these businesses are allowed to continue to degrade both men and women without any backlash on the companies. I believe that while our culture has previously allowed advertising that is degrading, eventually there will be boycotts against these companies that have a history of objectifying men and women.

Blog 4

The first exam of a semester can be an eye opener when it comes to your first test grade. In my case, I did not receive the score I was aiming to get, which allowed me to come up with some ideas to do better on all my exams. Firstly, I should take more notes than I was previously taking. It was obvious I had not taken enough notes in the first quarter, and I can attribute that to only having one class with a lecture. The lack of actual lectures this semester had made me slack on my note taking, so that is the first thing I will be working on. Secondly, there are a few resources that I should look at that I had not yet taken advantage of. I should pay closer attention to the information within our modules, such as the objectives and related activities. I think if I look at these more often, I will have a better idea on what to expect to see on the next exam. Thirdly, I could have let my family know in advance that I would be taking an exam at home. When I got home the other day, I had the house to myself, so I decided to do the exam. I sat down where I usually do my work, which is the dining room and unexpectedly, my family arrived back home while I was doing the exam, distracting me ever so slightly. I think that if I had prepared a little more for taking the exam and let them know I was taking it, I would have done better. I am positive that in my future exams I will improve since I will be taking better notes and studying harder than before.

There is no doubt that music are special creations as well as tools. Songs appeal to our emotions in a way that can relate the lyrics to our own lives. I believe that music has the potential to change or distract one from their emotions as well as heal them from negative experiences. Also, I’ve always found the fact that patients with dementia are brought to life and stimulated by music from their past. Sharing music has always been important to me, since myself and others can share a bit of our emotion with each other without having to use our own words. I believe that while we all think differently, the music we listen to can invoke specific emotions, and we use those emotions allows us relate to one another. I have found that while my friends and I do not listen to the same music, we always vibe with, or enjoy, the music we show each other.

On my self evaluation of the Self Efficacy test, i received a score of 8/10. I believe that this is an accurate judgement, because while i may not consider myself a perfect student, i do consider myself to be efficient and have the drive to excel in my career. I always try to stay on top of my work by several days, and occasionally go through stress that encourages me to work harder for my classes. Staying up to date on assignments allows me to relax when not doing schoolwork, which i consider just as important as doing the work itself. I enjoy studying from home and relating my studies to topics in other classes and being creative while finishing my schoolwork. The spread of Covid has created new challenges for myself and my peers, however i am confident in my ability to succeed despite these obstacles we face today as well as tomorrow.

Within the study of any scientific subject, it is important to reflect on discoveries by other social psychologists. studying the knowledge and procedures that previous social psychologists use will help us achieve a better understanding of our social dynamics. Making connections and sharing those ideas with my peers will help us find new solutions to the problems within social psych. When I study the aspects of social process and continue past the class; I will think of how our objectives interconnects with my life and the lives of those around me.
