There are several attitudes of love that affect how we love other individuals, such as the passionate love Eros, or mania, which is to be possessive and require reassurance from another. I found that the attitude I value most is Agape, or love that is selfless. The seven attitudes of love affect how our relationships work, and how our future relationships are affected by the previous one’s. Studying these attitudes towards love allowed me to see how my previous relationships were affected by my attitudes, and how they will continue to affect my relationships.

Sternberg’s triangle of love

Assignment Takeaway 3

Prejudice, discrimination, and racism in America have never been easy topics to discuss as a white American. Even though many associate this tendency with guilt, I’ve always been an open-minded individual who takes the time to listen to another opinion and why others may think that way. The prompt of the essay asked us whether Michael Richard’s outburst arose from deep-seated racism, or perhaps came from an uncontrollable anger problem. As I thought about his situation, I leaned between both answers and decided that the use of his language did indeed show discriminatory beliefs. This conclusion was difficult to come to as I was thinking about why someone would use harmful language in this situation instead of why the use of it is not excusable. I eventually decided that the use of this harmful language is not acceptable in any form of communication because of how other individuals see the use of that language. It is 2020 and people should be aware that these racial slurs do hurt people, and should have no part in normal conversation, nor in arguments because of the history and hate that are so closely associated.

Assignment takeaway 2

For assignment two, I did not have very many pictures of myself, so I asked my best friend to send me a few. When I began writing the assignment, I jokingly told my friend, “I could writing this assignment about you instead.” I had been friends with her for nearly ten years, and we have hung out plenty of times and have taken plenty of pictures. I used several pictures from her phone, and most of the paragraphs in the assignment mentioned her involvement. I realized that we share a tight bond and that we always got each other’s back when we need it.

One of the pictures I reviewed for the assignment. The assignment’s prompt allowed me to realize that our minds occasionally miss important details when making judgment calls. Learning about how our cognition can lead to bias made me realize that our cognition can also be taken advantage of. Certain industries, such as tobacco, find, and exploit our minds to encourage rash decision making. I also found that viewing certain advertising can create bias to encourage customer loyalty. An example of misleading advertising would be a label that defines a product as “new and improved”, which is a completely subjective statement. It is important for me to be aware of bias and outside influence in order to make more thought out decisions.

This meme shows how some companies play multiple sides

Assignment Takeaway 4 Love can be a hard emotion to comprehend.
