Weekly Blog

Blog 10

After looking back at what I wrote in blog one I think the course gave me what exactly what I expected. I feel that I have achieved the course objective very well as I have been very successful in the course throughout the semester. I said before that I wanted this course to help me build my foundation for the future with communication since I aspire to be a doctor and it did just that. I feel that I know more about how people communicate and behave and now I know how to react and take on different situations. My attitude about social psychology has change a little bit because there were certain things learned in the course that I did not know went along with social psychology for example the discrimination and prejudice part of the course. If I could do anything differently if I were to take this course again it would be to take my time on the weekly blogs because over the semester I gave away easy points that may be crucial when calculating in my final grade. One way I have grown academically over the last few months was not procrastinating as much which I could tell a difference in my papers when I out more time and effort in them. One skill that I have gained from this course that I can utilize in my professional life is how to communicate and solve different situations, the emotional intelligence week really helped with this.

Stop Procrastinating: Inspirational Quotes to Light a Fire Under Your Ass - Organized Mind + Life

I chose this image because my academics would not be as good as they have been if I had procrastinated in my work this semester as I have done in previous semesters. This image relates to my blog post because it is what I have been preaching about this whole semester. I have stated many times that I want to be successful, I want to have good grades and I want to get my dream job of being a doctor. Procrastination is not going to get me there.

Throughout the semester I have learned a lot of new information. There are 3 things that have stuck out to me during this semester when doing the weekly blogs. Those three blogs that struck me the most were blog 2, blog 3, and blog 7. Each blog dealt with something different in relation to social psych and I really enjoyed doing these blogs.

The second blog of the semester was based on self-efficacy. To do this blog we were required to do a survey to figure out what our self-efficacy score was. Looking back I still believe that the score I received represents the kind of student I am perfectly. The score I received on this survey goes on to show the work that I have turned in during this semester in this course. Every writing assignment I have received almost a perfect score and this is because I take pride in my work. I have done something like this in my psych class that I took in high school and I have to say that my results were completely different. In high school, I was not as hardworking as I am now just because high school was so easy for me I could get by with procrastinating, but that does not work in college.

The third blog of the semester dealt with the relation between our music choice and our relationships. Before doing the assignment I never thought about how our music taste could affect how we build/ attract relationships. I didn’t realize that all of the people closest to me have the same music taste. It showed me that it is true that we are more attracted to people who have the same music taste as our own. This assignment taught me that music is something bigger than its lyrics it is a part of our personality and we tend to have relationships with people who have similar personalities. This concept of the music is similar to assignment 4 we had to do based on the kind of love we like to receive. After doing that assignment I got two of my roommates to do it because I thought it was interesting to see how different our results would be and my results were more similar to the roommate who has a closer similarity in music than the other who like to listen to a lot of country music which is not my forte. So, I think that music taste shows us who we are very similar to. I haven’t taken many psych classes in college, so I can’t think of anything I have learned similar to the music taste, but for assignment 4 in my high school psych class, we took a love language quiz when learning about love and the different kinds of love.

In the seventh blog of the semester, we were required to watch a video about emotional intelligence. After watching the video we then had to take an emotional intelligence quiz to learn our specific score in the different areas. Doing this blog I learned what exactly emotional intelligence was because I had never heard of that term and I also learned that it is good to have emotional intelligence because it will help individuals react in situations that aren’t always easy to handle. This blog helped me realize that I actually do have good emotional intelligence when looking back at past situations I have been in. This concept relates to my module 10 archive which deals with the social norms and what is done when people are not following the social norm. In my archive I talked about my trip to Florida recently for a soccer game and in the hotel people were not wearing masks. I just went into depth about how I and my team/ coaches handled the situation which deals with our emotional intelligence. I have not been in another psychology course where we have talked about this concept. The closest thing I could remember that can relate to this topic would be in my sociology class in high school my teacher gave us different scenarios and we had to present how we think we would react in those situations and I think that is emotional intelligence, but I wasn’t aware at the time that it was.

I chose this image because it shows the qualities I think are important to be a successful student. I think all of these things are important in their own way, for example, I think it is really important to talk to the professor to not only build relationships but for help, they are there to help us learn so I like to utilize my resources if I am stuck on a concept. I personally do all these things on a weekly basis to make sure I stay on track of success.

After reading the article, “Sexual Conflict: Uncovering the Mysteries of the
Mating Battleground,” I learned more information about how there are differences between men and women when it comes to different aspects in a relationship. After reading, I have to say that I agree that most women choose their partners based on emotional involvement instead of sexual interest. I also agree with how it was stated that men would do certain things because they think it will increase their chances of having sex. I have seen this first hand with a lot of my friends where a man will be super nice, then all of a sudden they act completely different once they get what they want.

How Men Upset Women: The way men upset women is different from how women upset men. Men upset women because they lack communication. Guys do not need to text or communicate as much as women do, so if a guy does not use text/call a woman enough, this will cause her to be upset. It always upsets women when men take the longest time to reply to a message, but it does not affect them if women take too long. Men can also irritate women when they are not giving them their undivided attention. Men love playing video games. It can cause them to ignore their surroundings, which irritates women because they aren’t getting the attention they need.

I chose this image because it shows how women get upset when their significant other is not paying attention to them.

How Women Upset Men: The way women upset men is different from how men upset women. Women upset men when they are very clingy. Men like to have their space, but women love being around their partners. Guys love to have their alone time, so when they feel that their partner is too clingy and up under them, it tends to irritate men. Another thing that women do that irritates men is when they are too bossy/controlling. When women control their men, it hinders their ego, and they do not like it; men want to be seen as the alpha in their relationship. They feel that they are supposed to take care of their woman, so there cannot be two alphas in a relationship.

I chose this image because it shows how men do not like when women are super clingy. This image shows how the man is very uncomfortable because his girlfriend is super clingy.

Self-regulation and emotional intelligence go hand in hand. Self-regulation is how you control your behavior and emotions. Emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware of one’s emotions and handle interpersonal relationships. I think that you cannot have emotional intelligence without self-regulation. They have to coexist with one another. The more you self-regulate your emotions, the more aware you will be. If you do not have self-regulation, then you will lack emotional intelligence.

In my opinion, emotional intelligence is our ability to control our emotions while considering other people’s emotions in order to handle different situations. For example, if a friend is ordinarily talkative and one day you see them and are quiet. You make it your mission to talk to them to see what is wrong and tell them that no matter what they are going through, it will be okay, and they will get through it.

I display emotional intelligence in a lot of different ways in my life. One example of me displaying emotional intelligence is when one of my roommates and I was having a huge disagreement, and I was starting to get heated and upset. With that being said, I thought it was best that we continue the conversation the next day when we both had cooled off instead of having the conversation that was going to the left. This shows emotional intelligence because I know how I was feeling and knew it was smart to come back to this topic once I was in a better state with a better mindset.

After listening to Jean Kilbourne’s Ted Talk, I have to say that I am absolutely disgusted by the evidence shown and talked about. She talks about how the market is now targeting youth as young as 6 months old and I can totally believe that. With the market targeting such a young age group why do we oversexualize things for advertisement and these young children see this and this is what they think of beauty. We believe what we see all the time is beauty so these young children who see super skinny, straight-haired, lighter skin people are going to believe that this is what beauty look likes because these ads are setting this as their standard. This is why there are so many people with insecurities because the media gives us a false reality of what people actually look like. I think there needs to be a change in how things are portrayed with the advertisement because what happens now is not healthy.

Before listening to Jean Kilbourne’s I was aware of how ads and commercials over-sexualized women and even young girls. I know that these ads they put out for us to see are photoshopped and these ads do not define beauty in my eyes, but I can see how it has affected people in my generation. If you ask a guy what he considers beautiful a lot of them will say “straight hair, lighter skin, skinny” and this is due to the beauty standards that the media creates.

It is a shame how there are ads that treat women and men so differently. I was never aware of this before listening to this Ted Talk. Women are photoshopped into bodies that are impossible for everyone to look like. Women have to go through all this photoshop to get smoother skin, to look lighter, to look, skinner, while men get to have bigger muscles with barely any photoshop done to their photo. There was an example of Brad Pitt in an ad and how he looked like a human and barely had his photo touched up and then next to his photo was a photo of Linda Evangelista that had been touched up so much she didn’t even look natural at all. Advertisements do not target men’s bodies like they do women’s we are treated differently and given this image that is just not reachable.

Feminist advertising by Dove, Always, and CoverGirl, explained - Vox

I chose this photo because I feel like it leads to insecurities about being a female athlete. What does that statement like a girl even mean? There should’t even be statements like oh you’re a good baseball player for a girl. Why can’t we just be good at a sport. It is like the ad is degrading female athletes.

https://fstoppers.com/originals/photographing-women-sexual-manner-are-we-all-guilty-objectifying-women-112940?page=4

I chose this picture because it sexualizes women and it’s a clothing ad. This ad is meant to be sexy and sexy is what sells. The open legs have nothing to do with clothing so it shouldn’t even be used in this ad.

41 Feminine Sexualization of Food ideas | human experience, food, social issues
https://www.pinterest.com/viptnguyen/feminine-sexualization-of-food/

I chose this image because it is another example of how women are over-sexualized in advertisements. This is a food ad and it using burgers as an imagery of a woman’s chest in attempt to cover herself.

Are we Women more than men responsible for the over sexualisation of kids and the objectification of women? - GirlsAskGuys
https://www.girlsaskguys.com/social-relationships/q1895837-are-we-women-more-than-men-responsible-for-the-over-sexualisation-of

I chose this image of an ad because it shows that yes men are also sexualized in ads, but they are not sexualized the same way as women. These ads do not point out any of the flaws of men like they do women. And these ads aren’t also degrading to men like they are to women.

Should These Companies Have Their Ads Be Labeled as Too Sexy?
https://www.cheatsheet.com/money-career/hypersexualized-ads-turned-you-off-famous-brands.html/

I chose this last ad because it also shows how women are put down in comparison to men in advertisements. This ad is sexualizing this woman while the man just looks like he is taking a shower. He is getting cleaner with the axe body wash and she has a sex toy whip in her hand hence the dirtier caption it is meant to be sexual. Even when both genders are in the same ad there is a way to sexualize the woman and not the man. Somehow both genders are posed the exact same way, but the woman looks sexy and the man does not.

mannmedia / Chelsea's Professional Endorsement

Source A is a credible source because it has an expert in that specific field, someone credible speaking out about the product and supporting it. With an actual dentist being in this toothpaste’s ad, it helps the brand build a ton of credibility if there are professionals in the field who are openly supporting their product. If a dentist who has gone to school and knows all there is to know about teeth support your toothpaste and what it has to offer, that is a credible brand. If the toothpaste weren’t the best out there, an expert in the field would not be doing an ad to support it. This builds the brand’s credibility because we always buy/use the things our doctors recommend us to use, or at least I know I do.

Source B is an ad that is not credible at all. This ad is not credible because it presents a false representation. After all, you can clearly tell that the ad’s picture has been airbrushed and photoshopped. This ad also looks like one of those scam pop-up ads that sometimes show up on your computer due to its huge click here “TRY IT FREE” button. This is also not a credible ad. It says you can try this product for free, which is misleading because it won’t be free even if they say all you have to pay for is the product’s shipping. Lastly, this is not a credible source because what is this brand? This is not a famously known brand, so they aren’t credible if people haven’t used their products and have seen results. There also isn’t a dermatologist supporting this ad or company saying it is good for the skin and getting rid of wrinkles.

Neutrogena - Zoƫ Hennessey
https://www.zoehennessey.com/netrogena

Source C is an attractive source to sell skin care products to teens who want to have skin like Vanessa Hudgens. With this ad, the skin company picked a famous idol that teenagers look up to because she is pretty and wants to look like her. With teenagers seeing her on this ad and seeing that she “uses” this product and thinking that she has the perfect skin, they will buy this product because they feel it will help them become more attractive with clear skin. After all, that is what the ad shows of Vanessa Hudgens. In this ad, Vanessa Hudgens is shown to be a pretty girl with no blemishes, and she is using the Neutrogena product. This is a perfect example of an attractive source because they are using a well-known stunning, young celebrity to appeal to the teenagers who want clear skin, and it will get them to buy this product. I did not find this ad attractive, but I know if I were asked this question 4 years ago at the age of 16 I would have totally said yes and I would’ve 100 percent had boughten this product.

I went back and reviewed Exam 1 even though I received a perfect score. Even though I got a perfect score, it was good for me to go back because I had a few questions stuck between two answers. Even though I ended up choosing the correct answer, it would help me see all the answer choices so I can know why I chose the correct answer and how I can tell the difference between the two if I were to be asked again.

I think to keep my success, I need to continue being consistent with my study habits. A week before the exam, I studied for about 30 min to an hour every day. I also plan to do all of the exam reviews because it helped me prepare and realize what information I knew versus what I needed to go back and learn. If I stay on the path that I am on and not become complacent, I should continue doing what I am doing now.

My Relief of finishing an exam

I chose this picture because it shows how I feel after taking an exam that I know I prepared well for. It is a relieving feeling knowing I put the work in and got the grade I deserved.

I never really thought about how we are more attracted to people who have similar music taste. Reading this article made me realize that I, in fact, do believe that we surround ourselves with others who have similar music tastes. The article talks about how music is considered a “social badge,” and it gives us the ability to judge each other’s personalities, and I find this very true. Like if someone particularly listens to pop music, I would consider them to be upbeat and happy. This is my third year in college, and each year I have different roommates, but this year my three roommates and I have been closer than I ever have been to the previous ones. My roommates and I have basically all have the same music taste. You could take anyone’s phone and put their music on shuffle, and we would all love it. Every car ride we have is a jam session, whether we are going to the Food-lion on Colley avenue five minutes away or a forty-minute trip to the beach. I think this is no coincidence that we all mesh so well together.

Life Outlook- I was Here (Beyonce)

Little Cousin- Party (Usher and Chris Brown)

Soccer Teammates Mr. Brightside (The Killers)

Mother- I have Nothing (Whitney Houston)

Father- Honesty (Pink Sweats)

Me- No Guidance (Chris Brown and Drake) (Image shown below).

I chose these specific songs because they were the first songs that came to my mind when I thought of that particular person when I think of them. Whenever music is played around these people, the song I chose for them is always played, which is why I guess I associate that song with them.

I chose this image because it is the album cover of one of my favorite songs. Whenever my friends hear this song, they say that it reminds them of me. The song is “No Guidance,” by Chris Brown feat. Drake and it is must play if I am around.

When looking at my self-efficacy score, I believe it represent the type of student I am perfectly. I believe that I am a very hardworking student who strives to be the best at everything I do. I am vocal with my professors whenever I need help or when I do not understand a particular concept. I study so I can comprehend and retain the information learned in each course so I can be successful after college in the medical field.

When it comes to the classroom, I usually am very confident when it comes to being successful. Even though I am confident in my academic abilities, confidence can always be higher. It is looking a little different for me this semester because I am a student-athlete here at ODU, and we are playing our season now in the Spring since Fall sports were canceled. Typically, playing in the Fall, I would take my not so challenging classes to be more manageable with traveling and everything. Now, in this Spring semester of 2021, I find myself taking more of my difficult courses with the season, and it is just a very overwhelming feeling I have so much to do with little time to do it. So far, it has been very good for me. I have not lost my confidence to do well in my courses, but I know I would feel more confident in my capabilities if I would not procrastinate as much and do my assignments and notes earlier. This goes on to show how self-efficient I am because even though the semester is a little bit more difficult for me, I am still striving to do my best, and I have been successful thus far, and I expect it to stay this way the rest of the semester.

The highest self-efficacy score is a 40 or a 4.0. I received a 34 or a 3.4 on the quiz. This is good because this relates to how I do in the classroom, which could be why I am so successful academically. My results being so high show how I can get things done no matter the difficulty, but I stay on track, and I make sure everything is done right to be successful.

The Perfect Notes for the Self Sufficient Student

I chose this image to show how in depth I go into my notes in order to be successful in my courses. Sometimes it may take me one hour to do notes other times it may take me as long as three, but no matter how long it takes me to do them I get them done because I know it will help me in the long run. I am in school to become a doctor and I have to do what it takes to get there and it is going to take hard work.

After reading the course objectives for this course, I am really looking forward to learning this semester. This course will help me build my foundation for the future. In the future, I aspire to become a doctor, and knowing how people communicate and behave very important. I believe taking this course of social psychology will help me later down the road. While taking this course, I hope to gain a better understanding of how people behave and communicate. I also hope to do well in the course to help boost my GPA for medical school. I hope when taking this course helps me become a better communicator, so in the future, I can establish good relationships with my patients as I am supposed to be someone they can trust and confide into if needed. To ensure success in this course, I plan on giving a hundred percent on my work, and I also plan on studying to ensure I understand the information provided. To me, not only for the exams but for life after the class. I believe that I am not doing myself justice by just performing well in the course; I feel as I need to understand the information so it can be used to lead to my success when I start working.

The False Identification that comes with Representative Heuristics

I chose this image because I can relate to it being a student-athlete and because on an everyday basis. I never realized how often I did this until reading about it in Chapter 2. I am guilty of judging someone by how they look, already coming up with assumptions in my mind before even getting to know the person. Going back to the image, I relate to this because it is the stereotype for athletes that everything gets handed to us. It is assumed that we have the upper hand just because we play sports for the University we attend. This is not the case at all; it is challenging being any student, whether it is a normal student or a student-athlete. Being a student-athlete is very difficult, but we do not get treated any differently than anyone else on campus when it comes to the classroom.
