I found a position called ‘Information Security Engineer’ from the Federal Reserve. The job listing includes key activities and qualifications. The requirement of a Bachelor’s degree is very broad by requiring something STEM or closely related from an accredited college or university, or equivalent related education and/or experience. I’m fairly certain that cybersecurity falls under STEM, specifically technology. The courses under the cybersecurity degree here should also cover all baseline information requirements and may aid in learning similar concepts and technologies.
There are some technical skill requirements listed as well as more general business skills. Applicants need demonstrated skill in at least one general purpose language, eg. Python, Java, C#. Applicants have to demonstrate cloud platform knowledge with some of the following: Python, Java, AZURE, AWS cloud native, GitLab, and containerized environments. They also need working knowledge of information security concepts, NIST-based control compliance, and MS Office products like Visio, Powershell, or PowerApps. They need an intermediate understanding of information security to be able to work independently and serve as a resource for less experienced staff. They need the skills to research effectively on their own and good mentorship skills.
The position has a business customer facing side to it so applicants will need skills related to that like communication, active listening, patience, problem-solving, and empathy. They also have to lead by example in customer service, collaboration, teamwork, and reliability. For that they will need to be good at conflict resolution, decision-making, persuasion, and tolerance. They have to communicate the status of assignments efficiently, so skills like time management and organization play a big role in that.
Some more of the required abilities include analyzing details, adopting a big-picture view, and to explain complex technical information to technical and non-technical people, including executives. Applicants need excellent initiative, innovative thinking, and oral and written communication skills.
