Complete the Social Media Disorder scale. How did you score? What do you think about the items in the scale? Why do you think that different patterns are found across the world?
I scored an 8 out of 9 on the Social Media Disorder scale, highlighting a significant reliance on social media. The items in the scale bring attention to a range of both internal and external issues tied to excessive social media use, underscoring how it can easily become an addictive behavior. This experience opened my eyes to the real risks associated with social media addiction, especially considering how Western culture often encourages its overindulgence. Global differences in social media addiction patterns can be traced to unique cultural, social, and economic factors. In some regions, the rapid development of technology and social media access is encouraged as a way to stay connected, while in others, restricted access or social attitudes toward technology can limit or discourage excessive use. These differing patterns reveal the influence of each society’s values, priorities, and available resources on how people interact with social media.
