To me, I believe that the biggest difference between sports communication today vs years ago is social media. Speaking from a sport’s fan point of view, most of the information, updates, and highlights that I come across are from social media. Whether it be via instagram, facebook, twitter, etc, all of the sports related information is right there. It makes it so much easier. For example, if I am a die heart Dallas Cowboys fan, but not a true football fan, I could just follow the Dallas Cowboy’s social media platforms to keep up. In that case, that would be a personalized team social media account for fans to follow. To add another example, say I’m one of those sports fans that mainly wants to see the daily/ game by game highlights and best plays. For those people, there are social media accounts strictly created to keep fans updated on the best plays. Finally, for the last example, say that there is news surfacing about a specific player/athlete, and I want to see multiple different sides of the story and people’s thoughts about it, I can hashtag his or her name, and see different posts about it. Social media has also led to many more job opportunities. In all, I would say that social media has made sports easily accessible and specific for each type of sport’s fanatic. To predict how sports communication changes within the next five years, I honestly don’t think it will be a whole lot different than now. I would just think that sports will be even more social media driven. I think that in the future, regarding team social media platforms, teams will be more directly inclusive and interactive with their fans via social media. Things like giveaways and posts dedicated to a “lucky” fan.
