Review the articles linked with each individual motive in the presentation page or Slide #4. Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.
After reviewing the articles linked, this is how I would rank these motives with 1 starting with the making most sense to 7 being the least sense.
- For money
- Recognized
- Revenge
- Multiple reasons
- Political
- Entertainment
- Boredom
I believe that number one makes the most sense to me, especially in these times when it is hard for most people to find jobs. Even if they do have jobs, inflation has gone up significantly and minimum wage has not. A regular nine-to-five job is not suitable for today’s cost of living. So, this is what discourages people and makes them want to commit crimes for money so that they have enough money for at least essentials and their families. Next, I feel that recognition would make the most sense after money reasons. I say this because in some cases, when someone is doing good in a rare known field and not being recognized for it, they would not feel heard or seen so they would go do something more known such as committing a crime so that they can fulfill that satisfaction of being recognized for doing something, even if it’s not something good. Although it is not okay to commit crimes under any circumstances, especially revenge, people are human and have a right to feel how they feel in the moment. With this being said, people react out of spite and people do things before thinking about their actions because they could be hurt in that moment.
There are many different reasons why people commit crimes whether the reason is necessary or unnecessary. There could even be more than one reason why someone commits a crime such as safety reasons, peer pressure, poverty etc,. Depending on their reasoning, it could be understood why someone would commit a crime. An offender can commit a crime politically because they don’t like the unfairness of the government or state. Lastly, entertainment and boredom fall under the same umbrella. Someone could commit a crime for entertainment because they were bored. Both of these reasons are unnecessary as there are other ways to be entertained without committing any crimes or breaking any laws. It is never okay to commit a crime, but if the reasons are valid there should be some leniency shown to the offender.
