Here are some guidelines to help authenticate a website

  • Examine the URL- Make sure that it matches the official domain of the business or organization it claims. This examination helps to avoid falling for fraud and tricky schemes.
  • Watch for errors- Watch out for grammar errors, and spelling mistakes. Many hoax websites show these signs.
  • Look for professionalism- Professional websites are normally well-designed and user-friendly. Be aware if the website needs to be updated or more professional.
  • Verify HTTPS- Legitimate websites use HTTPS. Ensure there is an “S” at the end as many people miss this error.
  • Confirm contact details- You can confirm contact details by calling the phone number, sending an email, or looking up the address. Here is an example of a real email address “jane.doe@domain.com., jane_doe@domain.com.”
  • Utilize online tools such as Norton Safe Web, Google safe browsing, etc. This helps avoid potential risks

Now I am going to explain why the first three websites are fake.

Although the first three websites have “HTTPS”, These websites look unprofessional; the words in the category bar are blurry, they have errors, and false information, and the contact information is not legit. Two of the fake websites had a lot of pop-up ads with fake deals. Whereas the next three legit websites are professional, The URL matches the domain of their business/organization, has no errors, is user-friendly, has legit contact information, and has a lock on the left of their URL.
