- How does your major relate to cybersecurity technology?
- Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
I would say my major relies heavily on cybersecurity technology because I am majoring in cybersecurity. In my major we learn about how cybersecurity technology is used in everyday life and how it can be used to help or harm people depending on who is using the technology. We also learn about how much the technology has advanced over the years and what we can expect to come. My major shows us the methods people take to secure their networks, systems, applications, or devices using cybersecurity technology. My major is not the only one that can relate to cybersecurity technology there are others. The four majors at ODU I believe can relate to cybersecurity are Computer Science, Cybercrime, Database Information, and E-Business & E-Commerce (Information Systems & Technology). In most schools cybersecurity is a concentration of computer science. Technically speaking cybersecurity is seen as a subset or subfield of computer science. Computer science focuses on basically everything that deals with computers and computing. In cybersecurity you need to understand how a computer works so you can protect its systems and networks. Cybercrime deals with technology related crimes. In this major you look at computer crimes and cyberlaws. Cybercrime is becoming more and more prominent in society today and it’s essential for people to be aware of this. Hackers are constantly causing harm around the world. This shouldn’t be taken lightly and in this major you learn about how crimes are committed in the cyber world and how cybersecurity can help prevent them to keep people safe. Database information focuses on both the cyber and business world. You learn to do things like implement computer databases and security measures. You also go over the different techniques and systems of cloud databases. Setting standards and implementing security measures is necessary in cybersecurity to keep systems secure. Cloud databases are a big thing in cybersecurity as well. Many people today store private data on these cloud databases and cybersecurity shows us the methods that can be taken to secure it. E-Business & E-Commerce also focuses on both the business and cyber world. You will learn about web development, internet marketing, and other things. I chose this major because in order to complete and get the degree students must understand things like internet architecture, structured data and programming languages, database connectivity, and internet security all of which is important in cybersecurity. In cybersecurity it’s important to understand the architecture of the internet to help better protect networks. I believe these four majors best relate to cybersecurity.
