After my internship at Seaside Occupational Therapy, I have gained a deeper understanding of how people require specific functions to remain active. The Seaside occupational therapy clinic serves both adults and children, and I have gained valuable hands-on experience. I learned that I enjoy supporting young clients in developing or regaining skills necessary for daily living, such as fine motor coordination, gross motor coordination, and enhancing cognitive functioning. I observed and assisted with the development of individualized treatment plans, the use of adaptive equipment, and therapeutic activities tailored to age-specific needs. I have gained an understanding of developmental milestones in children while enhancing my communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with clients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. This experience has provided a glimpse into my future working with children.
Observing the growth of autism patients in an occupational therapy clinic can spark a strong interest in the field, as it reveals the real, meaningful impact therapy can have on a person’s development and daily life. Seeing children or adults gradually improve their communication, sensory processing, motor coordination, and social skills through consistent support highlights the value of individualized care. Witnessing their milestones, like a child making eye contact for the first time, completing a task, or expressing themselves more confidently, can be both rewarding and inspiring. It shows how small, tailored interventions can lead to life-changing progress. This hands-on exposure not only deepens understanding of neurodiversity but also creates a personal connection to the work, often motivating individuals to pursue a long-term career in occupational therapy with a focus on autism support.
