Gregory Wilson

On November 6th, my 200T class was hosting a guest speaker. His name was Mr. Gregory Wilson, he came to teach us about his life in cybersecurity and his unique views as someone who has worked in the field for many years.

The first item that stuck with me was his view on the rising trend of AI in cybersecurity. He first explained how he had believed it wouldn’t be a huge issue and or asset when its products were first brought to light. However, as time went on he noticed the extremely rapid evolution of AI and its ability to completely reshape cybersecurity and its fundamentals. I also believe in the possibility of AI and I like to also recognize the possible threats it can pose in the future if we don’t capitalize on its latent potential.

The second thing he said that stood out to me was his opinion on communication being the true key to knowledge. The amount of networking he mentioned during this segment was interesting and showed me that making it alone in such a competitive field such as cybersecurity wasn’t a realistic approach. He explained to us the ways to gain newfound knowledge through others’ efforts and to build relationships throughout multiple companies and fields to further enhance your own work ethic.

The final thing he mentioned that resonated with me were his words of wisdom regarding being open-minded. He ended the segment with a lesson on freeing ourselves from our own shackles. Not to be tied down to a singular place and to expand our horizons even if it meant moving to another state or even country. Anything in the pursuit of self betterment and the advancement of our personal skills. He spoke about skills which you cannot learn by staying stagnant and encouraged us to branch out to fields we could be unfamiliar with but would help us with our future careers. To take the risk and to put aside our fear is something he believed to be necessary for success.

In conclusion, Mr. Wilson gave our class many points and his own personal experiences in the field through many methods such as giving examples and giving out his own wisdom on topics. I believe that his advice will help me seek out even better opportunities and to seek out advice instead of expecting it to come my way.
