Reflection Instructions

For this assignment, please reflect on the Fall 2023 semester, and your experience as a whole. For each question, please provide a few thoughtful, well constructed sentences.

Your First Semester

  • Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.

Although my grades don’t reflect it, I am super locked in and next semester I will have something to show for it. At the beginning of the semester I was locked in and doing my assignments on time if not early, but now I have little to no motivation to do anything.

  • What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.

I expected this year to be full of fun and I expected to be super locked in and focused on my work and 50% of my prediction came true. This year has been very enjoyable so far when it comes to my social life but academically it’s not going too well. I started off this semester averaging 4 hrs doing assignments and having an assignment tracker that I regularly updated. As time passed and I started doing more things and going out experiencing new things, my motivation to do schoolwork disappeared.

  • What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?

I wish I knew that my professors really didn’t care whether I passed or failed and I would’ve taken that and held myself more accountable to ensure that I was putting forth my best effort to get the results I wanted for myself.

Study Habits

  • How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?

I spend way less time studying for classes now than I did at the beginning because there’s less assignments and less motivation on my end.

  • How have your study habits changed?

If I am being completely honest my study habits have vanished.

  • Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.

I can tell you about a resource that I attempted to use and WILL NOT be using again next semester. Every time I tried to email my advisor or ANY advisor they ended up not answering the question I had or just not responding in general. It’s better to visit in person even though it’s quite the hike to the new health building.

  • What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?

Allotting 2 hours every day to do assignments and if I am all caught up, I will work ahead. This is going to ensure that I don’t fall behind like I did this semester. I got a taste of what college classes are like and next semester will be better.

Health Professions Learning Community

  • This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
    • On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which  these courses are tied together.

This semester I was taking SOC, HLTH, AND CHEM, each of these classes made subtle references to the others but it wasn’t as if they were intertwined and connected.

Parallel Plan

  1. This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
  • Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?

Early Childhood Development and Dental Hygiene are two majors I would consider outside of Nursing. I have always been drawn to children so I would take a degree in ECD and use it to become a Kindergarten or 1st grade teacher. As far as Dental Hygiene, It’s just something that I’m slightly intrigued by but I’m unsure if I could actually bite the bullet and switch.

  • What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?

Life can throw a curveball at any time and it’s always good to have a backup plan in case something goes wrong with your original plan. Establishing this early will also make it so that there is less stress on you in case something were to  happen.

  • How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?

Neither of the alternative majors I chose could benefit my current intended major since they are both so drastically different.
