Prompt:

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

I’m not sure why this was assigned as both a discussion board and a journal entry, but nevertheless, as I stated in my discussion board post: the obvious overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime is in the fact that an illegal activity is being performed. But ideologically an overlap is found in specific topics and concepts such as interdisciplinarity, ethics, and the human element. Criminal justice simply refers to the penalization of individuals who commit crimes, but illegal activities can be committed across many different facets requiring an interdisciplinary approach. Cybersecurity also requires an interdisciplinary approach because there are more than just digital threats to the security of the cyber environment; there are also physical security concerns as well as social engineering concerns, which is similar to criminal justice. Nevertheless, ethics also plays a major role in both Cybersecurity and Criminal Justice, especially when individuals are to be investigated and subsequently reprimanded or alleviated of suspicion. For example, forensics for both criminal justice and cybersecurity should remain ethically sound so that proper action can be taken regarding the suspect. Good ethics is also required for internal personnel for both criminal justice and cybersecurity, and a balance between trust and non-trust should be maintained considering that insider threats remain a significant attack vector. With that said, the human element is the main reason for good ethics to be required, and it is arguably the most important reason for both criminal justice and cybersecurity to exist in the first place. Without human nature and error, there exists no crime and no need for securing IoT devices, thus eliminating the need for criminal justice and cybersecurity but that is not reality.

To summarize, there is overlap in the sociological aspect as well as the ideological and procedural aspects.
